In Truth Divided

Swedish metal really is a huge thing in this day and age; some of the best bands in existence hail from the place, in particular Gothenburg, which is where the story of the guys that lead the way for the others to come through began. Dark Tranquillity have been together since 1989, making this year a whopping 31 years as a career with now 12 full length studio albums. They are a melodic death metal band, and to note that their original singer went on to form one of Sweden’s other biggest bands in the scene In Flames, the style in which they write is one of Sweden’s biggest contributions to the metal scene.

“Standstill” stands out to me (HA) as a great track, like a gothic pantomime between growls and distortion with the melodies and soft vocals which really combine into a dark but beautiful song filled with technicality and so many different layers of tones and sound it really fills the air similar to a later track “Failstate” although that track is much heavier in sound and style. “Transient” is another one that grabs my attention particularly when it comes to the chorus, it’s just so catchy for a growled chorus which is what is striking and something just keeps it sticking there so you keep replaying the track in your head. “Empires Lost to Time” really gives me a vibe of something from a video game where a characters expression is disbelief and then it pans out to show an all-out war happening in front of them, all just from the chorus riff which is really extraordinary, this is where the album truly ends for me because while album closer “In Truth Divided” is stunningly beautiful balladesque track which builds and strengthens as it progresses (sort of like the fallout from a battle maybe, just to really push that analogy home) I prefer to end on a high. There is a real beauty to their sound when they take a toned down approach because those clean vocals and tones blend together so perfectly.

Another one of those “wish I’d checked these guys out earlier” sort of deal here. Really enjoyed listening to this album and all I can look to as a positive is that now I have a whole back catalogue worth of material to go through, which I do quite enjoy but I also have a lot of them at the moment! Anyway, go stream this album!
