Things I Learned Today: Our History With Honeybees is Sweet

Apparently, our relationship with honeybees goes back longer than we’d originally thought. According to an article in the Washington Post, researchers recently published data that supports the idea that we’ve been harvesting honey as far back as the neolithic period. Archaeologists have found beeswax residue in potsherds found below the 57th parallel. Domestication and climate change may have had some effect on the shift in the honeybee’s latitude range.

In addition to providing humans with wax (for sealing and burning) and honey, bees provide pollination to most of the crops we consume. Knowing that we’ve had such a symbiotic relationship for so long and knowing how much we currently rely on them to keep our foodstuffs growing, it does make finding answers about why the honeybee is now in crisis a bit more desperate. 

Here’s hoping our relationship with bees only gets sweeter.
