Sweet Molly Foreword
This is not only my most recent work, but my first attempt at something scary. I don't know if I set the mood, but I certainly tried.
Sweet Molly
Late in the night; When the house is sleeping She hears the monster Start its creeping. Through the window And up the stairs Into her room It waits and glares. Beneath the covers Frozen still. If it cannot see It cannot kill. Her parents, they Do not believe her. They console her. They deceive her. There is no monster, Go to bed. That is what They’ve always said. From the darkness Comes a whisper. Why are you hiding Little Sister? Why is your body Filled with fright? Come out and play; I will not bite. But she hides And does not listen. She’s seen his fangs, And how they glisten. Only when The darkness dies, And the sun Begins to rise Does she emerge In open space. Her heart returns To a normal pace. She runs to her parents Both sleeping, still. They don’t believe her. They never will. The mother’s eyes They fill with tears. “Your brother has Been dead for years.” “Please believe me just this once. I can’t take this. It’s just too much.” The father sees Her tears and sighs. “We’ll stay one night. But no more lies.” The sun goes down. The house grows still. The prodigal son Returns to kill. Beneath the blanket She hears the screams. Her parents’ voices. To haunt her dreams. Now in the dark She cries and hides, From two more Glaring pairs of eyes.
