“You know what I love more than agonized screaming? The sound of people choking on their own blood. Very satisfying.”
Spoken just as he’s shaken by another round of heaving that leaves scarlet dots on pale, white hands. The Prophet looks up with a glare, raw lips pulled back over teeth (red in the cracks) like an animal; a silent snarl. Cough, cough, cough. More blood. God, it’s everywhere – why does this keep h a p p e n i n g?
“Sick… Na-nasty thing, you. Kranker Verstand…. Gebrochenen Verstand… One day you are going to find that you have relished in the suffering of the w r o n g person..
Think today is that day.”

Blood and disinfectant stung at the doctor’s nose long before he’d entered the room, but that was to be expected. In fact, it almost felt like home. Despite the scent of bleach that permeated the air, there was little need for a luminal test to expose where the blood had been. There had been a prominent delay between when the killer had spilled the blood and when it had been cleaned, leaving subtle but detectable traces. “The killer wanted to admire the fruits of their labor,” he murmured, “before disposing of the display so as not to arouse suspicion.”
The fact that the wounds were inflicted with several different knives—some surgical, some common kitchen utensils—was immediately apparent. Despite the obvious indentations of a scalpel upon the body’s chest, Dr. Lecter could tell that the killer was not a medical professional. There were no distinct death-blows aside from the slit throat and arterial spray. This stabbing had been done for the sheer passion for it, not for technical precision—more Jackson Pollack than Leonardo Da Vinci. There was a youthful, impulsive quality to the strokes. Artful yet untrained. Malleable, the doctor thought, as though he needed any more incentive to find the killer.
The trace outline of a handprint caught his attention instantly. Surely, it didn’t belong to the victim. A lack of print-identification suggested gloves were worn. Besides, was smaller, more delicate, than the victim’s hands. Thin fingers...graceful fingers...“Agent Crawford,” he exclaimed, “have you considered the possibility that our killer is a young woman?”

Within the week, a man was left unconscious but alive, pumped high with sodium amytal, within blocks of the crime scene. The man carried shiny new medical-grade scalpel in his pocket and a letter sealed in plastic sewn with a surgeon’s care into his stomach; a deep enough cut to the abdomen would reveal it instantly. On a fine lambskin vellum that was no longer manufactured due to humanitarian concerns, the doctor had written in thick, elegant calligraphy:
My dear girl,
In a world of mold-casting and cheap replicas, your work is a refreshing change of pace. Though expressionism is rarely my field of work, I have a deep appreciation for what you have exhibited over the past few months. Your prior canvas put up something of a fight, did it not? I understand that the preparation of a surface is something an artist holds dear, but there is certainly something to be said for a pre-gessoed canvas. I hope you can put him to good use.
Regards, C.R. PS: I hope you don’t mind that I removed his spleen before I presented him to you. I enjoy savoring the fruits of my labor. Surely you can understand that.
PPS: If I were you, I would leave just enough of a calling card to allow you an appropriate pen-name. Had I the choice, I would not have chosen mine, having worked a great deal outside of the Chesapeake area long before my present work. Make no mistake, you will receive one. Best to do so on your own terms.
[MSG]:Nothing kills the mood quicker than kneeing him in the face during sex.
