their dynamic is so insane. it went from 'i want you to be the next panthom sixth-man that will surpass the og' to 'i'm dropping you like a hot potato bc you're useless but i'm still gonna use you until you're spent anyway' to 'oh thanks for reminding me that i'm pathetic bc you're right i've talked so big before and end up embarrassing myself' to 'im so relieved you don't hate me after what i did to you'
akashi will always have a soft spot for his senpai after he's changed akashi into the best version of himself. akashi owes mayuzumi his life after saving him and the whole rakuzan bc let's be real here if mayuzumi didn't snap some sense into him, akashi would end up destroying himself and everyone would stop respecting him as the captain and people probably would be booing rakuzan idk. just look how hayama was so pissed when akashi was barely functional after his ass got beaten by kagakuro duo and nebuya was so close punching him in the face and even shirogane almost ditched him. however, mayuzumi, as the oldest member, he's being wise in his own way. he might be brash but at least he's still believing in akashi. he knew the akashi he met on the rooftop wasn't that weak so he accidentally triggered the "og" akashi coming back to life sorta like kissing a sleeping beauty from her long sleep lol
mayuzumi is not merely the new phantom sixth-man yada yada. his existence is the pivot of akashi's major character development, he literally helps akashi to find a way to himself so i will never get when the half of the fandom (long time ago) treated him just like Some Guy
oh gosh mayuaka is so dear to me. i shipped them as a joke at first bc haha look!! they're so silly!! i mean their first encounter was giving shoujo manga, right? the way akashi boldy said he's interested in mayuzumi to his face, on the school rooftop and probably happened in early spring, just like a heroine confessing her love to the protag 🏃➡️
not to mention akashi is literally the embodiment of the heroines in the light novel mayuzumi reads. i'm not making this up. this is canon i swear ✌️
also akashi starts reading the light novel that mayuzumi reads on the rooftop. he makes a fun of it at first saying its content is banal but still finds the heroine cute. also there's an official art where kise finds him reading a light novel with a moe cover on it lol
anyway, i think the reason akashi likes mayuzumi, aside his presence is interesting (akashi, for someone who’s collected, he giggles often around mayuzumi--he finds him amusing). he's like one of a very few people who doesn't put him on a pedestal. as we all know akashi is everything, right? he's our mister perfection but mayuzumi does not care about it at all. he does not fear him. he rejects akashi in the first place, something that akashi probably never gets before, and he makes akashi so human, noticing how lonely akashi is even describes him as a lonely king and he calls him a spoiled brat and actually chews him out when akashi acts like one
jokes aside, i love the way akashi understands mayuzumi on soul levels. he's like the only person who's aware of mayuzumi's presence when everyone barely remembers him, he knows exactly where he is (i mean how does he know mayuzumi is chilling on the rooftop both the first time they met and the scene where mayu should've attended a retirement ceremony. how does he know mayuzumi will come all the way from kyoto to tokyo just to paint some wall. how does he know he would come to hang out with the other shadows. and how does he know where's mayuzumi exactly when none of a single person no idea during graduation ceremony but it implies akashi has come to see and talked to him) he knows what mayuzumi wants and needs so he challenges him to the life he's never been before, opening a door for him to a new different world, and turning his life less boring, and how akashi knows mayuzumi's eating habbit and worried when mayuzumi is eating less.
mayuaka relationship is one of a kind. they're sure not the healthiest couple in the series and even borderline toxic at first (two arrogant assholes meet on the rooftop. truly a match made in hell) but they end up respecting each other and value the impact they've left on each other. they've brought out both the worst and the best of each other's. that's peak fiction right there!!!
and i think akashi's love for mayuzumi is unmatched. i mean yes everyone loves akashi; his friends and people in general (except his dad and haizaki haha) but no one really likes mayuzumi. no one loves mayuzumi the way akashi does. he always makes sure mayuzumi gets involved and not being left alone (post wc, of course) and how mayuzumi still admires him despite everything and is proud of him. oh gosh they love each other in a way i can't fully understand.
so many things i want to say about this ship and i wish could put into better words how much i love them but i'd end up writing a whole 10 pages essay and not stop ranting about them for like 10 hours.
TLDR, I LOVE MAYUAKA SO MUCH THEY'RE SO INSANE THEY COULD BE BOTH A GUT-WRENCHING SHIP AND ABSOLUTE BUFFOON THEY MATCH EACH OTHER'S FREAKS THEY'RE SO PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER MWAH
NIJIAKA
nijimura is akashi's og senpai and akashi's senpai complex awakening lol
they're like one of the healthiest ships in the series. the mutual respect, mutual understanding, and the way their bond remains strong are so chef's kiss!!!
akashi is being casual around others but he's so respectful to nijimura. he sees him as someone he looks up to and nijimura is like the only person that akashi has relied on in teiko. nijimura may not be the best player but he knows how to handle his team well. nijimura also the person who calls akashi "obocchan" (like mayuzumi), implying that he sees akashi as just a kid, not a superhuman like everyone always thinks of him.
also i think they understand each other's responsibilities that they carry on their shoulders. like nijimura understands akashi's responsibilities as the only heir of a prominent family in a nation and akashi understands it must be hard for nijimura being the eldest brother with a sick parent (something that akashi could relate because he used to be in his shoes too) while he's still maintaining the team. tho if im being super honest, it's kinda rubbing me the wrong way the way nijimura just gives up on his captaincy to akashi who's barely 14 at that time. don't get me wrong, i love nijimura and i don't blame him at all bc he also has other things to worry about and if we have to blame we should've blamed the adults. it's just too much for akashi to carry the responsibility while he has a ton of other responsibilities on his back. like even tho akashi could doesn't mean he should.
nijimura also played a big part in akashi's character development. akashi started losing himself when he lost shirogane and nijimura. the "im counting on you, captain akashi" while akashi looked at his back will forever haunt me until my deathbed
anyway i love nijiaka. i always have a soft spot for them since nijiaka is like my very first akashi ship before myak topple it lol they're so cute and wholesome but
they also hurt me. for me, nijiaka is like divorced parents who still respect each other even though they take different paths and it makes me happy that they're still in touch despite everything (and it's like akashi is the only teiko person that nijimura is in touch with bc in his replace novel it implies that he distances himself from anything relating to teiko)
MIBUAKA
for obvious reasons, mibuchi is the only person who call akashi "sei-chan". he cares A LOT about akashi and very open to it. he literally pays attention to his sei-chan. his type is also a person who's attentive which is it's akashi.
their relationship is more like platonic to me (i'm biased bc mayuaka is the otp lol) but i'm also okay with them romantically. i mean mibuchi's major crush for akashi is super obvious, right. and he's not ashamed about it. akashi also knows it and he doesn't mind mibuchi being mibuchi around him. not to mention mibuchi literally reads love poems so he can one day recite them to the person he likes aka akashi.
they're so underrated gosh only the real ones recognize them. mibuchi deserves better and akashi is the best for him. they're adorable and funny together. i think after mayuzumi left, the rakuzan captain-vice capten duo would be so powerful. mibuaka ftw!!!!
HIMUAKA
okay, this one is a crack ship lol and def not an excuse for shipping akashi with older boys (i blame the 3rd fandisk!!). listen!!! i think they would get along because 1) basketball 2) murasakibara 3) nijimura, voila, the world is so small.
i think they're similar yet quite opposite of each other. both are basketball freaks (esp himuro), murasakibara's moms (mura is a spoiled child, he does not listen to others, except akashi and himuro), and the way akashi and himuro spoil murasakibara is similar: both bribe him with snacks and are not being too hard on him unlike midorima and fukui. not to mention, nijimura could see akashi in himuro, both are so mature for their age as nijimura mentions in the novel. and, oh, they're absolutely the prince charmings in their schools.
also besides himuro and akashi parallel, i think akashi could see nijimura in himuro too. both have this oniichan charms/the big bro figure in their groups (absolutely very akashi's type lol), beef with haizaki, are good at fighting, ex-delinquents yet very caring to the people they care about, and his physical appearance is similar to nijimura: black hair, grey eyes (funny mayuzumi has grey-eyes too), and they're about the same height (with himuro slightly taller).
i just realized akashi has very specific type: older, grey eyes, taller, pretty, and angry inside
i wish there were more himuro and akashi interactions since rakuzan and yosen are like cousins to each other (thanks to akashi who invites yosen to have a pratice match). they would be irresistible duo. also i think their dynamic would be akashi is the enbaler to himuro's shenanigans (just like in 3rd fandisc where everyone is pissed at himuro and akashi is the only one who enables him haha)
this crack ship is very rare which its very obvious why and only has less than 30 fics on ao3 but trust me they're all worth reading.

i love akashi with rakuzan better tbh he looks way more relaxed in high school than his middle school (for obvious reasons). they care and respect akashi as their captain (even someone's so prideful like mayuzumi) yet dot on him esp mibuchi. they're not really seeing akashi as a tyrant leader, they're babying him instead. rakuzan is basically a circus and akashi is one of the clowns. i love them so much.
GENERATION OF MIRACLES
they're very dear to akashi. the reason akashi lost himself is because he's afraid of being abandoned and left by his dear friends but thank god their relationship has been so much better. i love the way akashi is so caring about his friends well-being to the point nagging, he's literally the mom friend even aomine jokes about akashi being their mom ("are you a freaking mom?!"). akashi deserves love and his gom friends give him all the love they have.

akashi's very bestest friend. born on the snowy day and the same age as akashi. he loves his yukimaru so much he even has yukimaru plushie. so cute.

i have soooooo many akashi's headcanons but since i have yapped from the beginning, i will pick one: akashi's love language is food. that's very asian of him lol. he loves cooking for people he cares about and pays attention to their well-being. he would ask them if they had their meals yet and def would cook their favorite food.
general opinion over said character
he's the victim of mischaracterization by the fandom over a decade. i mean, yeah, he’s stabbing kagami with a pair of scissor and being mean to him were so unnecessary, but half of the fandom has made it his whole personality. ffs, it's just one time thing and he's just being silly!!!
i'm tired of half of the fandom treating him like a ruthless psycho who would kill you. sure, he has said embarrassing things and i've got second-hand embarrassment from it but again he's just a chunni, okay??? everyone has been through this phase, it's just akashi's chunnibyou is very apparent lmao
i think akashi is the softest person in the whole series. the way he's very caring and attentive to the people around him yet he himself has a lot of responsibilities, def too heavy for his small back to carry alone. he still manages to put others instead of himself first is just 🥺🥺🥺
akashi has always been a lonely kid. that's why his fear of abandonment is very obvious. he's also the victim of his father gaslighting to the point he thinks he's not allowed to have fun. but through the series, we can see how much people love and care about him. the way they put their trust in him is very telling. akashi has always been too hard on himself and i hope he knows his friends and boyrfriend love him so much.
