JAMES
- won’t make assumptions about betty and why she changed homeroom
- passes betty’s house on a skateboard
- tells betty not to believe rumors from inez (that are true)
- does something bad to betty (the worst thing they ever did)
- is only 17
- doesn’t know anything
- misses betty
- knows where it went wrong (in the gym)
- they hate crowds
- they saw betty dance with him
- walks on cobblestones
- thinks of betty
- is asked by someone (august?) to get into the car
- gets in the car
- spends the summer sleeping next to august
- but dreams of betty
- shows up to betty’s party
- shows up on betty’s doorstep after planning it for weeks
- dances in levis drunk underneath streetlights
- gives betty their weekends
- puts betty on like an old favorite cardigan
- leaves like a father
- similar to peter losing wendy (won’t grow up?)
- draws stars around betty’s scars
- marks betty like a bloodstain
- gets on the last train
- smells like smoke? (after being around august possibly?)
- will miss betty once the thrill (of august?) expires
- says betty is their favorite
- as never august’s to lose
BETTY
- changes homeroom
- has a party
- dances “with him”
- kisses james in downtown bars and cars
- is marked like a bloodstain by james
- is assumed to know nothing due to youth
- knows james will come back to them
- curses james for the longest time
AUGUST
- is at the beach or somewhere similar
- whispers sensual things and gets tangled up in bed sheets
- compares their situation to james to slipping away like a bottle of wine
- knows james was never really theirs
- cancels plans hoping james will call
- really wants to meet james at the mall
- reminisces about their time with james
- picks james up in the car
IS IT CRAZY TO THINK TAY IS JAMES SIMPLY BECAUSE JAMES HAS THE MOST NARRATIVE AGENCY OF THE THREE CHARACTERS?
