The two of them did join Overwatch around the same time. They spent much of their first few month recovering from their respective issues together in Doctor Ziegler’s office, with the good doctor and Winston - and sometimes Captain Amari - for only company. In these days, Genji remembered, he did find the young woman’s presence and talkativeness quite grating, and this didn’t get better as he overcame language barrier…
Yet he would be lying if he said Lena’s honesty and determination never had a positive influence on him. Well before his chance encounter in Nepal, he would dare say his co-worker’s inherent optimism was very much a factor of constant motivation. Even at the lowest point of his life, working by the former pilot’s side had been enough for him to find a motivation for his battles beyond a will for revenge.
I live for the simple things. Those simple words were Lena’s alright. In a way, he was surprised by how no different from so many years ago she was. Surprised. But also somewhat relieved.
“You really haven’t changed at all… Not that it is a bad thing, of course. With all we have been through lately, I think we need people like you to stay true to themselves.”
He turned toward his colleague as to face her properly, and then came to realize there was actually nothing that philosophical in his colleague’s words. Seeing a reflection on the nature of life itself in every sentences spoken by a friend, that might have been a strange side effect of staying with his Master - so fond of masking his teachings through simple quotes - for too long.
“Erm… But if the simple things in question are those slices of cake Winston said he would leave for us at the cafeteria, would you mind sharing? I think I do live for those too.“
