Importing Bookmarks from Chrome into Firefox, or How to Switch Browsers to Protect Your Data
So let’s say that you, like many, have heard about the google data harvesting, and you, like many, are very uncomfortable with that. But the idea of switching browsers seems like a hassle-- you’re so used to google chrome at this point, so many companies are taking your data, why even bother?
As someone who’s recently switched browsers, let me assure you that it is easier than you would think, and the bumps in the road are minimal. While firefox and other browsers may not be as sleek as google chrome is, it’s a very small price to pay for your privacy; Firefox doesn’t harvest your data for capitalist profit (shocking I know).
One reason why it took me so long to switch was because I didn’t want to have to remake all my bookmarks. Then I realized that I was being dumb and could probably import my bookmarks to other browsers. So I looked it up and, yeah, I actually can and it’s super easy and intuitive.
Not only that, but you can also import autofill data or saved passwords! The following literally takes like 30 seconds and boom! all of your important links are on a better browser. It’s literally so easy and Firefox doesn’t use your data for profit!!! There are so few downsides to this people!!!!
How to import bookmarks:
First, open chrome. Click on the 3 vertical dots on the upper right of the screen, and click on the bookmarks tab. You will get another pop up; click on Import bookmarks and settings...
You’ll get a pop up titled Import bookmarks and settings. There’s a drop down tab where you can click whatever browser you want to import into, or even download an html file of your bookmarks. For Firefox, there are check boxes for importing autofill form data and saved passwords, which is also a plus because then you don’t need to re-enter all of your information in the new browser; it’s a nearly seamless transition.
So, Click on your browser of choice, check whichever boxes you want to have, and then press Import.
From there, you just need to restart Firefox, and then when you open it again you will find a folder on the bookmarks bar following any existing bookmarks you had on your bookmark bar titled “From Google Chrome”.
There you will find all of your bookmarks! You can arrange them on the bookmarks bar however you like or keep them in the folder! But it’s done!
Again, super easy, more privacy, need I say more? There is no reason not to do it!
(And, if you were interested in a more secure web browser, duck duck go is a good alternative to google)
Feel free to leave additional privacy tips! Happy importing.
