This weekend is the grand opening of my virtual gallery to promote my @niftygateway collection, Displaced: Giraffes in the City, dropping on August 15th at 6:30 pm EST. #niftygateway Tomorrow at 1 pm EST, I’m chatting live with wildlife biologist and conservationist @abdullahih.ali, and on Sunday from 12-10 pm EST, live DJs will be streaming. 🌐 www.swopes.gallery 🌐 I’ve created #SwopesGiraffe art for a decade now, and it felt imperative that I give back and share their story, especially when endangered. So, I had an idea to collaborate with Somali Giraffe Conservation and intentionally “displace” myself in multiple cities. I visited Portland, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Denver, and Los Angeles in two weeks. I used the conservation’s photos of giraffes, shot and edited six single editions with my iPhone inspired by displacement and six more multiple-editions inspired by climate change. 10% of all sales will be donated to conservation. I feel so excited but exhausted. Being displaced is no joke! I’ve never been so grateful for my home. But I’m so thankful for all the support and the fact that I actually have these ideas, and now they’re coming to life. It means so much! “Why the giraffe?” Probably one of my most asked questions 😊 #SwopesGiraffe began in 2011 through Instagram. I made a lot of different types of iPhone edits with animals, but the giraffe somehow stuck. I’d like to believe it’s because a few things: The giraffe fits the composition so well. Tall buildings just look right with it! Also, more and more people would request that I do another edit. So, it truly started to become a friend to others and it became a friend to me.
