No Ifs, Ands, or Putts & [Vixxen]
@dr-drckken
When Drakken had suggested put-putting for their first official date, Vixey had been a bit caught off guard. She wasn’t even sure why. It wasn’t that she had anything against putt-putting necessarily. It was just so different from anything she had done on a date in a very, very long time. Perhaps ever. She and Charlie had never had much time to go on dates. Sometimes, they went to a nice restaurant or a show, if they both happened to be off.
And she and Hercules had fallen into the very stereotypical dating tropes: the farmer’s market, dinners, the movies...
The more she thought about it the more it made perfect sense. Drakken was by no means typical. Vixey quite liked that about him, actually. He was a high school professor too, so obviously he was going to have a little bit of kid in him. Maybe it would bring out a little kid in her too. She didn’t think she’d mind that as much, though she had fretted. That--maybe she wouldn’t be able to have fun. She’d find it all too silly and then it would just be like Hercules all over. Only, this time, she could potentially lose a friend.
She was jittery with nerves as they got out of the truck and made their way inside. The putt-putt course was actually in Besydus, since it had more land than NTO. She passed it every day on the way home, but she hadn’t been there since she was...maybe 16? They went up to the counter and Vixey chose an orange ball and the appropriate length golf club.
“Do you want to do 18 holes or 36? If you do 18, you have to choose one of the two themed courses. If you do 36, you can do both for half the price,” said the bored teenager manning the counter.
“Oh, uh--” Vixey glanced at Drakken. “Which do you think?”

Fall in Love & [Vixxen]
@dr-drckken
Vixey had a date to the fall carnival! Which was just every cliche in the book, but she didn’t really care, because it was definitely better than not having a date to the fall carnival. And, it came at the perfect time, between her birthday and the anniversary of Charlie’s death--with just enough time in between for the carnival to keep her spirits up and push the thought of that morbid anniversary looming.
Everything was bright and colorful. She had already said hello to her friends and now, she was walking hand-in-hand with Drakken down the rows of carnival games, trying to choose one. She had already said no to the goldfish one, because she always felt really sad for the poor goldfish.
“Oh, what about the bottle pyramid game? It is so hard, I can literally never hit a single one!”

How Many Cowhands Does It Take to Change a Lightbulb? & [Vixxen]
@dr-drckken
Vixey was a little over a month away from opening the shoppe, but it still felt like there was so much to do. Mostly fill it with stock. There were little things too, like finishing attaching the new light fixtures. She had done most of it by herself, with a revolving door of help from her family and most of her friends, but she had grown up on a farm. She could fix a car, rewire a circuit, redo a light fixture, make shelving and clothing racks. And it felt good to do it all by herself. She was proud of how the shoppe was coming together.
Except...she had done something trying to screw in the light fixtures and had plunged herself into complete darkness. Fuck.
She got out her phone with it’s flashlight so she could climb down the ladder and went over to the breaker, but flipping it didn’t do anything at all. For a moment, Vixey just stood there on the verge of tears. If she couldn’t get this fixed, it was gonna cost a ton of money for an electrician to come out and figure out what was wrong with it. Vixey could call her brothers, but it would take them forever to get here, plus this was a busy time on the farm.
Al was just down the street but he had his own business to run and no offense to him, but she didn’t think he’d know what the problem was. Neither would Tiana or Jun, most likely.
But, well--
Drakken might know. She remembered him mentioning something about his own home renovations, not to mention he was pretty handy around the farm. Vixey bit her lip before pulling out her phone. At least it was Saturday, so he wouldn’t be at work most likely.
“Hey, uh--Drakken? It’s Vixey,” she said, her voice a little watery, when he answered. She wasn’t sure why she said that, obviously he knew who it was, he had her number. “Er, on a scale of 1-10 how good are you at fixing power outages?”

Just Desserts & [Vixxen]
@dr-drckken
Vixey had tried to push that disastrous dinner out of her head. She’d spent plenty of time reassuring Hercules that everything was fine between them and apologizing profusely. And she had edealt with all her friends ridiculous comments and opinions on the matter. None of which were accurate or true, even a little bit.
(It was ridiculous Drakken liked her! (Or as Jun said: had a crush, like they were bloody teenagers.)) (It was even more ridiculous that she liked him too!)
So, yeah, she was still mad about it but had pretty much forgotten about it. Life was busy. Her and Hercules were good. Things were moving right along, that dinner forgotten. Pushed into a corner of her mind that Vixey didn’t like to occupy. Full of embarrassing moments--like the time she’d showed up to the wrong rotation at the hospital. (Still thinking about it made her shudder.)
She was over it.
Until she spotted Drakken rounding the corner of the barn, disappearing around the side of it. Her temper flared.
“Drakken!” she called, running through the barn aisle to catch up with him, splashing through the mud. She wasn’t supposed to be running in the barn, but for the moment, she didn’t really care.
“Drakken! Hey! I need to talk to you!” she said in a voice that very much meant that what she really wanted to do was yell at him.

There’s Your Trouble & [Vixxen]
@dr-drckken
Things were going--good with Hercules. Not great. Not amazing. But good. Definitely the kind of comfortable that she felt after having not dated for...a year. Technically longer than that, if you included the five years she’d been married. Hercules was sweet. He seemed down to earth and responsible. All of these were good qualities.
It also helped that he was proper fit. Though, honestly, that intimidated Vixey. She wasn’t exactly someone who spent a lot of time in the gym. She did her cycle class once a week with Tiana, but that was about it. It was one of those things that she could see maybe being a problem down the road--
If there was a down the road. Vixey didn’t know if there would be. She liked Hercules and she just wanted to leave it at that.
She was just finishing applying her lipstick in the bathroom off the living room. If she didn’t leave soon, she was going to be late, but it had taken her forever to change her outfit. The door from the back of the house opened and closed--Vixey assumed it was her mother coming back in from the garden where she had been grabbing some legumes for dinner.
“Mama, do you think I should put my hair up or--oof!” Vixey, who was in the process of pulling her hair back and not paying attention as she came out of the bathroom, ran smack into something solid as she came around the corner.
“Oh, hey!” She smiled Drakken, then she laughed a bit. “You’re not Mama.”

The Fruits of Your Labour & [Vixxen]
@dr-drckken
This was Vixey’s favourite time of the year. It had been when Vixey was a young girl and continued to be, even when she had moved to London, even if she had left behind what made this time of year so special. She had really missed strawberry season, harvesting season. The house smelled sweet, just as she had remembered.
It was almost as if nothing had changed.
Of course, some things had changed. Vixey was older now, she had lost a husband, lost a career. Her little sister was off at college, too far away to come back early enough for strawberries. She’d return home as the summer squash began to ripen. Her mother’s back was a bit more rounded.
The old radio in the kitchen was playing a Bollywood soundtrack, the two of them singing along under their breath, hips swaying as the worked with ease and familiarity. There were buckets and buckets full of strawberries waiting their turn to be made into jam. On the stove, two sets of strawberries boiled: the first round and the second, side by side.
When the screen door opened, neither of them heard it at first. It was Red, the old hound, who ran in ahead of their visitor and almost crashed right into a carton of strawberries.
“Red!” Mayra, Vixey’s mother gasped.
Vixey just chuckled though, looking up with a smile when she spotted Drakken.
“Hey, there! Harish send you in for somethin’?” she asked, assuming her brother had sent their volunteer in for some odds or end they may need out in the field.
