Below the cut find ~900 words on vampire!Murphy’s backstory and headcanons about how vampires work. I’ve based my version on a variety of books, movies and my own imagination but the strongest influences come from True Blood and Supernatural. This general story will apply to any vampire verse and I will tag those I have active threads with now. I am open to tweaking things as needed to make future plots work though!

Backstory

At the age of 17, John Murphy traveled with his father and mother from Ireland to Massachusetts during the Spring of 1716. During their voyage, he contracted an illness which he passed to his father who cared for him while sick. With extra rations from his father, Murphy survived but his father died before ever reaching America.

He settled with his mother in a community outside of Boston, MA but things were never the same. She resented her son for her husband’s death and he withdrew from both her and their community. Following his mother’s accidental death, Murphy became a sort of pariah within the community, an outcast and not very well liked, and after he was blamed for a series of murders he didn’t commit, he was exiled from the community. Some pushed for execution but there was not enough evidence to convict him.

The vampires who inhabited the woods and kept to themselves, out of human society, were actually the culprits of the murders and the exiled Murphy was an easy target for them. They captured him and fed off him and tortured him for days until he was within an inch of his life. Their leader, Lexa, took pity on him, sensing he was an outcast like them, and decided to turn him before he died.

Murphy stayed with his maker, serving her faithfully as he was supposed to while she taught him the ways of his new people, until she died in a conflict with opposing vampire groups in the mid 1800’s. Since then, he’s travelled alone, occasionally taking a blood slave but mostly keeping to himself, away from both human and vampire affairs.

Strengths

Supernatural strength – Can lift things beyond the normal strength of a human his size.

Heightened senses – Acute sense of smell, hearing and sight. Stronger at night.

Psychic abilities – Can influence the thoughts and actions of others, makes humans docile and obedient. Requires eye contact, stronger with physical contact. Cannot influence anyone who has similar abilities or is consciously aware and trying to resist his influence.

Languages – Speaks English and French fluently (due to time spent in Louisiana and Canada). Speaks a little Spanish and is learning more. 

Healing – His body heals and regenerates quickly although the speed is influenced by when he last fed. If he has gone a while without eating, he will be slower to heal. He also does not age.

Weaknesses

Decapitation – This is the only way to kill him.

Sunlight – He can stand sunlight in small doses and it’s not fatal but it is irritating. He prefers the night but can go out during the day, usually donning long sleeves, sunglasses and some kind of hat. Prolonged exposure will cause something akin to sunburn.

Silver – Wounds inflicted by silver or when silver remains in a wound (such as silver bullets) will be slower/unable to heal unless he feeds. He can also be restrained using silver.

Dead man’s blood – When injected or consumed, it will make him very sick and weak. Vomiting, dizziness, headaches, and loss of strength and motor skills are among the symptoms of poisoning. A high enough dose will render him unconscious and he will most likely need to feed to recover.

Vampire Myths & Truths

Myths:

Stakes – Are not going to kill him. Only make him mad.

Garlic – Has no real value as a deterrent. The scent might be slightly irritating due to his increased sense of smell, but it will not keep him away.

Crosses/Holy Water/Religious objects – These items have no effect on vampires. In fact the Catholic Church is solely responsible for Italy’s thriving vampire numbers.

Reflections – Murphy is a corporeal form and therefore shows up in mirrors. The rumor that vampires can’t be seen in mirrors is misinformation propagated by their species.

Fangs – Vampires have a whole row of teeth that extend in order to feed, not just two fangs over their canines. Any heightened state such as the presence of blood, anger or sexual arousal can cause fangs to extend though older vampires have more control over their instinctual responses.

Shapeshifting – He cannot turn into a bat or any other animal. Very old vampires with very developed psychic abilities have been known to fly or move objects with their mind but he is not that old.

Truths:

Feeding from one human for a long time will build a bond. It makes it easier for him to control them and he can also sense their emotions and sometimes their thoughts if they are strong enough.

The same happens if a human feeds on his blood. Vampire blood will cause a sort of delirium but it also has healing properties. However, if he shares that with anyone, they will begin to develop a psychic bond with him and be able to sense his thoughts and moods better.

A strong bond exists between makers and their children. For this reason, it’s discouraged for vampires to make too many. Children must obey their makers until they are granted freedom or their maker dies. Vampire children are created when their maker drains them, feeds them their blood, and then is buried in the earth with them for a period of one day.
