The Motion Sick: The Motion Sick Interview on Strange Glue
When we were down in Austin for SXSW, we met up with awesome fellow Aidan Williamson, who interviewed us for Strange Glue. He was a swell guy and asked us a bunch of interesting things and did a great job writing it all up for your amusement, enjoyment, and education...
"This interview is over!" exclaims The Motion Sick's guitarist Patrick Mussari as he slams his hands down on the table in front of him, and all it took was a small mention of two words, Joy Division...

The Motion Sick: The Motion Sick Tour 2008 - 3/12 - 3/14 - Travis
From the moment we arrived in downtown Austin, until the second we left, I was on sensory overload. You can't walk 5 feet without either being assaulted by someone handing out free advertisements, CD's, flyers, etc. You also can't walk 5 feet without your ears being blasted by whatever music is coming out of the bars on each side of the street. 6th Street is insane. I was completely overwhelmed the entire time. We played a bunch of cool shows. I really enjoyed our showcase at Beso Cantina and West's. The Agave show was probably my worst performance of the whole tour, as I couldn't get comfortable at all during the set. I think it was doomed to fail for me as it started with having to lug all of my drums a bunch of blocks, only to find out that they had a house kit that everyone was using… That sucked. I was already dealing with a really nasty back injury that's flared up, so lugging gear when you don't have to is a total drag. Once set up, I just couldn't get in the groove. It didn't help that I couldn't hear Matt at all, which was a serious struggle on certain songs. I guess you can't win em all, but I would have liked to have played much better than I did. It bummed me out for the rest of the day. While in SXSW I was able to see only a few acts. I saw She and Him, which I thought were pretty ok. Maybe I'll check out the recordings, Mike says they're pretty good. I saw the last few songs during the Le Loup set. I really dig that band, and I'm psyched we were able to open for them a few month ago. I also saw Devotchka, which was an eclectic mix of classical instrumentation and crafty melodies. My FAVE thing was seeing Billy Bragg. He only played 3 songs, but he was captivating and comedic. I really want to see a full show of his sometime, I think he's a great performer and good songwriter. We ran into quite a few people and bands we knew while we were in Austin. It was nice to walk down the street and run into someone and chat for a bit. We made some new friends and reconnected with older ones. That was pretty cool. I gotta say, I am fairly bummed I didn't get to eat TX BBQ, next time we're in Texas, I'm making it a point to try as much local flavor as possible. I dug Austin. I mostly dug the SXSW experience. I think I'd like it better if I could just go to shows, instead of having to play. I'd love to be able to have the "fan experience", I think it must be pretty awesome. I also hope that we play some AWESOME showcases next year, The Motion Sick is gonna kick Austin's ass next year!!
The Motion Sick: Thursday 3-13-08 - Austin - Matt
After fighting with the internets, we stopped at the nearby Starbucks (yes… again) and headed into town. We were playing at 4:30 at one of the venues on 6th street; which is where all the major SXSW shows were happening. Parking in Austin was a bitch; the city closes down 6th street so it is really difficult to park anywhere near your location unless you are a big wig. So, we had to park in a parking garage about 5 blocks away (and 4 stories down). After 3 trips of carrying our gear to the club (and our stuff is heavy.. and I brought all of my smaller gear) we find out they have a backlined drumset. Bastards. So, we have carry the drumset all the way back to the car. After we play; we hang around the city for a while; find some food at a Pita Pit, and I got screwed by being forced into paying extra for Humus on my Falafel, and then having the stupid guy pit tzatziki sauce on it, instead of humus. We were all pretty beat and knowing that we have a super long Friday, we were in the mood to head back early. However, we had to wait for Patrick to get his phone (where he left it in Delaware). Again, the video explains far more than I will ever be able to say. While we were waiting though; we happened to see Kelly Davidson, (who we met yesterday), Benji Cantor (from Sonicbids and who we met on our last tour!) and their friend Heidi. We chatted with those guys (and Kelly took some great off-the-cuff photos – Thanks!) and once the mission was accomplished (Pat’s phone) we were headed back to the hotel for some TV and sleep.
The Motion Sick: Wednesday 3-12-08 - Austin - Matt
In the morning Jason made us some fantastic French Press Coffee… It had been a good two days; nice coffee without hitting a Starbucks at all, quite a rarity in this part of the world. After some chatting, we hit the road to Austin, our final destination for a few days, at least. I was excited, since our hotel is only about 20 minutes from downtown Austin and we’ll only be in the car for probably a maximum of an hour each day. My legs and body were definitely looking forward to that. So we got to Austin, threw our stuff in the hotel and headed to Bikini’s, the site of our first gig. Now, I’ve been to Hooters a few times, but this place was really strange. I just don’t understand the rationale of women totally exploiting themselves like that and I was wondering how much they actually get paid and whether that justifies walking around in a Bikini for 8 hours or if they just enjoy it. Plus, I often times hear women complaining about buying Bikini’s (and please; correct me if I’m wrong) so how many Bikinis do these waitresses have? Do the other waitresses make fun of them if they wear the same more than once a week? Unfortunately, I didn’t ask our waitress these questions, but we did have her do the video tour… its pretty hilarious. The show itself wasn’t too bad; we played decently and Bikini’s gave us a $60 gift card for food and drinks, which was very nice. So, after we finished up, we headed downtown to check out what the “real” SXSW was like… I have to admit; downtown was like a carnival for bands… So much stimulation everywhere, I really couldn’t believe it. After walking around and checking in with the venues we were playing the next few days, I became quite overwhelmed at the sheer number of venues and bands performing. I didn’t think it was possible to ever stick out in a place where every other person on the street was in a band (or thought they were). I think the video for the next few days will be far more telling than anything I can say. We did happen to meet a photographer from Boston while in line at the ATM to refresh our monies, Kelly Davidson (http://etchedonfilm.blogspot.com/) who we knew (by name) but have never met in person. She seemed very cool and we handed her the flyer for our list of shows, actually not expecting her to show up. We wandered around for a bit more and ended up meeting our publicity agent, Janelle Rogers from Green Light Go Publicity. Janelle was great, and her, Mike, and I probably chatted for about an hour about the various ins and outs of the music biz today. We then headed back to the hotel; preparing to get ready for the next few days.
