First off, credit to @fundiefanatic-s for alerting me to the story.
So apparently a man who had recently escaped a mental facility got a knife and killed one woman while injuring at least one other. The people in the streets - not the cops - chased him down and held him until police got there. They held this man down with chairs and milk crates.

Witnesses held the man down before police could arrive.
This man was taken into custody thanks to the work of ordinary - but quite brave - citizens. No guns were involved so the man was not killed. Nor were any bystanders hurt by someone firing and thus missing. And, since this man himself did not have a gun, his murderous rampage was significantly reduced. Yes, a woman still lost her life, but many more could have been lost as well if this man had had a gun instead of a knife.
One of the people involved who was interviewed by the news had just arrived today in Australia from the US. He even commented on how good it was the man didn’t have a gun.
