A common whitethroat (Curruca communis) perches in a pine tree in Surrey, England
by Barbara Evans
the spectacled warbler. a fuzzy little bird from the arid scrub-dominated regions on the Mediterranean coast, as well as several Atlantic archipelagos and further south into the Sahara. a dry area specialist. in fact, it's a notable animal resident of immediately post-wildfire areas, considering successional areas perfectly suitable for living in after even a single year of regrowth.
some populations migrate yearly, while some, namely the island-livers and those from far northwest Africa, remain on their turf year-round. migratory birds having at least some degree of sexual dimorphism is fairly par for the course - males bear dark heads with white markings, while females are more uniform, dusty brown on their heads and bodies alike.
rather reclusive, and they would be far more difficult to find if they specialized in a habitat with more hiding places. as it is, they end up fairly conspicuous, especially when whistling from atop a bush. primarily arthropod eaters, including insect eggs, but will eat berries and nectar if the opportunity presents itself. males sometimes construct nests to impress females, but the nest that's actually used is built by both members of the pair.
