#107 - Some storm I didn’t quite expect. Sympuls-E

I actually thought about following that last post up with some more recommendations from the realm of Crossover(-ish) Modern Metal but that plan got a bit thrown off by a potentially really sweet release later this week that I just have to cover and another release that really hit me out of nowhere.

That last one is the new album by Russian band Sympuls-E, who flew a bit under my radar until now. I remember listening to their first album but I don’t really remember how it sounded, so it probably didn’t leave the mightiest impression on me. And now, all of a sudden, there their futuristic font flashes up again, drawing me in. And this time around, the music behind that pleasingly Sci-Fi cover art and logo actually does impress me.

For a band that I knew exists but didn’t really follow or remember vividly, this is actually one hell of a surprise. Stylistically, you pretty much know what you’ll get when you look at the cover art. It’s slightly reminiscent of what In Flames used to put on their covers in the “Whoracle” era, but distinctly futuristic. And, while I’ll not claim that this album reaches the classic-status of those In Flames albums, this describes the musical contents quite well. It is Melodic Death Metal at heart, very focused on big and lead melodies, speedy, busy. But spiced up with techy stakkato riffing, dense upbeat synth work and short bursts of pathos driven clean vocal hooks that all gives it a certain cyber-y, futuristic and Modern Metal feel. Furthermore, the songs are really good. Well balanced and paced, catchy, still approachable in al their busyness, with a lot of memorable melodies and some pretty huge moments.

For me, this might be some of the best synth-heavy Modern-ish Melodic Death Metal I’ve heard in the last few years. It may be a bit too easily digestible in parts, just fly past you without leaving a mark in places, maybe a bit too polished for its own good here and there. But frankly, that does’t really make it worse. You’ll probably not brood over it for weeks but you’ll have a fun time every time you spin it up.
