I just wanted to thank you because without you I never would have discovered the Vorkosigan saga and Generation kill. Thank you for writing beautiful stories.
Aww man, thank you back! That’s lovely to hear, and I’m so glad that I’ve been able to lead you to some of my favorite things. :)
Hi, just out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite tropes?
My first thought was: I’M ALWAYS A SLUT FOR TROPES. Because yes, tropes, yes. (I’ve even thought about doing a McShep trope series, 1 fic for each trope).
As for favorites, oh gosh. Consulting this list, it’d have to be:
Non-human AU (werewolf, vampires, etc.), genderswap, regency au’s, school au’s, pretend couple, soulbond, and harlequin.
Crap, now I really want to write some trope fic XD
Hi, so, I am not familiar with the comics and the internets is a confusing place when it comes to those same comics, but can you please, please tell me are Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and the Vision good or bad guys, because I just can't figure it out. Comics are confusing. Thank you so very much. ^_^
This is a difficult question, and depends on what timeline/writer/editor you’re reading. 8)
Protip: Do not be reading Ultimates. Especially not for the Maximoff kids. No. Do not. Just... DON’T.
Anyway!
Short answer, they are caught in a complicated web of loyalties, family ties, morality, and people who can carry a grudge. But I consider all three to be pretty damn good guys!
Longer answer behind the cut. 8)
Some things you have to understand: In the comics, historically (because recent retcons have thrown everything up in the air like a bunch of pickup sticks and wow is that tiresome) Wanda and Pietro are the children of Magneto, Erik Lensherr, and Magda Eisenhardt, a woman of Romany heritage. Their father was not aware of Magda’s pregnancy, and she died soon after they were born, so they were raised Romany without much knowledge of their parentage.
(Sidenote: This is why a lot of people are pissed at the casting/background of the twins in the MCU, it’s erasure of a dual heritage (Jewish and Romany) that is not often represented in a positive manner in American mass media. The fact that Magneto, the mutants, and even the concept of “super powered mutant” no longer rests with the Marvel films complicates things, and necessitates rewriting their backstory, but I’m disappointed by the way Whedon and the Marvel higherups have chosen to do so.)
They were recruited early on as part of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (yeah, subtle name there, Marvel, wow) and they acted in direct opposition to Charles Xavier and the X-Men. Neither they nor Magneo, was aware of their relationship at this point.
Their activities, and Magneto’s control of the group, didn’t sit well with them, so they split. However, the X-Men weren’t exactly rolling out the red carpet, and there was too much tension for the twins to jump to that team, even though others had accomplished it.
Instead, Pietro and Wanda joined the Avengers, where the original team had disbanded, and Cap was heading a new lineup. Their stay was relatively brief, as Pietro is kind of a jackass who doesn’t play well with others, and Wanda was depowered. She started studying magic, in an attempt to reawaken her powers. It didn’t go well.
Though they stayed with the Avengers only for a short time, Wanda was an important part of the West Coast Avengers (where little child Sci loved her and the rest of that loser team dear good really). On and off, they’ve had a alliance to the Avengers and their old teammates, but the pull of their father, their mutant heritage, and the mutant struggle sometimes has them on the ‘wrong’ side of the fight.
They’re trapped, in many ways, and it’s hard to blame them. No matter how much good they do, they are always going to be Mutants, and always trapped by their parentage. For many, who understand the ways that distant, manipulative and emotional abusive parents can mess you up, they’re very sympathetic figures.
I love Wanda, and I’ll fight anyone who badmouths her. Quicksilver, I can take or leave, he’s another one like Namor for me, very sure of what he’s doing, very imperial, very short sighted sometimes. But most of the time, his love for his sister is his redeeming feature.
Which brings us to the Vision.
Cliffs Notes!
-The original Human Torch in the Invaders years (when the team was Human Torch, Cap, Bucky, Toro and Namor) was an Android, not a human being.
-Ultron (who was created by Hank Pym in teh comics) was trying to attack the avengers, and he kidnapped the Torch’s creator, forcing to retrofit Torch to give him a weapon to use. Said creator was like, ‘Kiss my (android’s) shiny metal ass’ and Ultron killed him. Vision fought back, and was beaten by Ultron, who overrode his memories of being the Human Torch with the memories/mental patters of another hero, Simon Williams, AKA Wonder Man, and sent him off to do the voodoo that he do so well.
-Vision punches some Avengers, they punch him, and his heroic memories overcome his programming, and he decides he can do better. He helps the Avengers defeat Ultron. He has a complicated history, between Simon’s memories (and Simon occasionally being alive or in a glass coffin kinda sorta alive), Ultron (who he rebuilds at some point) and Simon’s brother (who happens to be the bad guy the Grim Reaper, yeah, Marvels’ a really small world)
-He and Wanda get married at one point. It is pretty awesome!
-Sometimes he has emotions, sometimes he doesn’t. He’s conflicted about his existence, his loyalties, and his connections with his teammates. In the way of many AIs throughout science fiction, a lot of his internal thought process is about his lack of humanity.
-He shows up in Avengers AI and it’s a good book you should totally read it, it’s got so many bots and ladies and everyone is drawn like they have internal organs and I LIKED HANK PYM IN IT IT’S A FRICKIN MIRACLE.
Anyway, TL;DR, they’re all morally conflicted characters who are not always well treated by canon but they are all good guys.
First person to bring up House of M as a “Wanda isn’t a good guy” is going to get it. I SWEAR I WILL FIGHT YOU. 8)
I am a newbie when it comes to SGA and McShep and I love them so, so I thought you should know that your blog brings me so much happiness every day. So. Thank you.
Thank you! That’s so wonderful of you to say. I can’t stop smiling now~
Also, it makes me really happy to read that new people are still finding the fandom and falling for John and Rodney <3
2) If you were a player, what number would you want on your back?: Well, three is my lucky number, but there’s so many threes that I’d probably have to go with something else.. When I play road hockey I’m either 29, 31, or 40, so maybe one of them? I dunno, whatever number is given to me, I guess.
7) Favorite player drafted at this years draft?: What about that Tristan Jarry guy? He seemed deece, so I’ll go with him.
11) Least favorite team?: I’ll give you a hint.
29) Favorite NHL line?: I don’t really have a favourite line, to be honest.
