REVENGE OF THE SYNTH
The revival of the synth and synth based music is not so much a revival as it is a genesis of birth. Strange as it may seem, synthesizers were never dead and they were never lost to musicians – it is only in recent times that their technology has come to the forefront of technological debates and discussions. Why is it so relevant now, instead of 10 years ago? It comes down to the new technology battling the old. Tablet operating systems and home developed apps have made synthesizer style music accessible to any and all. For some, it is their first chance to experience what a synthesizer is. A physical synthesizer is hard to sell to someone who does not know what it is. Most of the good synthesizers out there, that are on sale second hand, are hunted and bargained for by wise shoppers. Rarely will you see one at a garage sale that is of any worth or value. The original owners know their value, and hobbyist collectors know their value. The advent of simulated synthesizers has actually made the true original something to be coveted. Is it really the revenge of the synth? That is up to you to decide. http://djmag.com/content/revenge-synth
