Why I cannot recommend the Olympus Pen-F

The Pen-F is a charming little camera which, like many a fine item, leans heavily on its exterior and is best left admired for its extrinsic qualities. The Pen-F marketing materials describe it as a beauty and a beast, which turns out quite accurate though not in the way this clever slogan intended. It is a beast to work with at times.

This is probably (and should be) surprising. After all, it is a camera that cost around a thousand euros when released and more if you were short of a matching lens. A kit would set you back over 1300 euros. This puts it in the price league of DSLR camera's such as the Nikon D7500 and its performance should be judged in the same context. The following critique is my own and limited to the more prominent annoyances, and is not meant to be complete.

Seemingly a bug (or a terrible design mistake) but at times it is impossible to alter the selected focus point. The only way to remedy it seems to head into one of the menus and return or take a photo to reset the quick access state. Infuriating because this always happens right before you're about to focus. No, my nose is not touching the touchscreen, this related issue has been fixed in a firmware update.

In close competition to the previous point in sheer frustration is the Pen-F's wake up delay even when it's switched on but gone into standby mode because you've paused taking shots. Pressing your eye against the view finder and depressing half the shutter button, it feels like it is taking ages for the sensor and EVF to turn on and show you the good news. I'm sure on paper the timings are impressive but when you've always been using a DSLR this delay is significant. Curiously, it never fails to frustrate.

I don't know whether this is exclusive to the Pen-F or inherent to the design of system camera's but it's one of the most limiting factors. Better stick to landscape scenes.

Complexity, the menu's are incredibly complex and having used a different brand some of the settings feel very counter-intuitive or redundant. For example, enabling focus point metering is not clustered with the rest of the focus point settings. There is a setting to allow you to set auto ISO in manual modes. Much like a double safety.

The next one shouldn't have been a surprise, though it still is when considering the price category of the Pen-F. At times your subject will appear in focus yet when looking at the result it turns out the background was in focus. Reviews did mention this, while understating the crucial fault by saying it should be fixed with a firmware update. It hasn't yet.

The default focus points are large, this means your metering will not be accurate when focusing on a point with a significant contrast running through it.

The default HDR ("HDR 1") mode is horrendous and makes it look like your scene was covered in a drab, grey veil.

I cannot figure out how to reset the parameters of the creative modes to their respective defaults. I've scrolled through the settings maze forwards, backwards and sideways but no cake yet.

Another software bug - when switching creative mode (Olympus their answer to Instragram filters) sometimes the switch won't register. You'll usually notice because the image in the EVF is still monochrome or selective colour mode.

No action shots, just as the reviews suggested. Even taking everyday photo's of people is a challenge when there's a little too much delay between releasing the shutter and taking the actual photo followed by a EVF blackout. So if you're hoping to take photo's of sporting events or your pets, there are better choices out there.

The physical knobs are great eye candy feel solid, yet to find out the shutter speed and aperture setting the dials are useless and I have to wake up the display or press my eye against the EVF. 

It eats batteries and the battery status indicator is terribly misleading. Ignore it and always carry a spare!
