System restore is a very underrated but useful tool available in Windows to fix a major problem. System restore allows one to go back to your data and settings if accidentally something goes wrong and all your stuff gets deleted.

Is it possible? I’m running into various issues at least once a week since it got corrupted or something, especially with homebrew.

I’m working directly in an Ubuntu Virtual Machine (VM). Some updates (like kernel) were available at the update manager.
If I weren’t using a VM, I wouldn’t update it since it’s a risk to break something. Since it’s a VM, you can create a Snapshot or export an appliance and restore if something goes wrong.

What I have tried in the past is:
Do a basic format/reinstall from the Fedora install disks
Make sure networking is enabled
Copy everything from rsync backup over the top of the newly installed system
