SYTYCD14 - top 7 perform

What’s the “your votes determine the finalists” thing? Are we having a top 6 final? A double elimination next week? They need to explain.

Nice opening number, if a little hectic, but it had sooooo many sync issues.

Why is this show so enamoured with Jenna? She’s a good dancer but like it’s like they always go out of their way to feature and compliment her :|

Oh my god, what the heck is Vanessa’s makeup team doing?! They are making her look more and more ridiculous every week.

Lex and Gaby - Hip hop Lex wore a flannel and beanie to rehearsals. He already wins in my book. There were times where I found Gaby more hard-hitting than Lex but Lex was still great and overall I liked this dance. Definitely in LexNation.

Logan and Allison - African jazz Did he say “I need a brain fart!”? WHat?? I loved the staging and lighting and it’s amazing. Liked the bit with the boards. Lots of fast action and athleticism. It took me a while to differentiate Logan and Allison. ANd what even with his solo, like he was trying to break the world record for head spinning or something. Whoa.

Kaylee and Cyrus - Contemporary Wow. Tyce Diorio managed to use both Kaylee’s unique way of movement and Cyrus’ animation background, coupled with good music choice. The musicality in the choreography was great. There was a bit too much angsty flailing for my liking but this was still a well-crafted piece.

Kiki and Jenna - Broadway Ugh, why did they have to be in horrendous full red costumes??????? Cos that was the only bad thing about that number. How many people did they need to throw all those canes? Honestly though, can we stop the #daddykiki thing because Kiki seems like such a casual down to earth guy and it seems to make him a bit uncomfortable. Also, I really want to haul out some scientific equipment to see how fast exactly he is turning.

Koine and Marko - Jive Marko is geeky glasses. Why didn’t anyone think of that earlier? Holy smokes! That was great! I noticed when they do kicks to the side their feet tend to be flexed - not even flopping, just flexed. Not sure if it’s intentional or if it’s because of the sneakers, but they can point their feet all other times so idk. And the song! I love it. 

All-star group number. When will they give them a street style? Also, what is Brian Friedman’s thing with stillettos??? Is he trying to kill everyone’s feet? Still, very visually interesting dance.

Taylor and Robert - Contemporary Last week someone pointed out to me that Taylor always lifts the same leg and now that’s all I see. I think Logan does it too, but it’s really obvious for Taylor because she lifts her legs all the time. That said her dance with Robert had some interesting lifts and her solo was a biiit different from her usual ones so at least she seems aware that she needs to keep things interesting on TV instead of just treating it like a regular competition.

Comfort and Mark - Hip hop Where did Mark get that amazing colorblock shirt from?? I want one! “It better not be another love story!” Same Comfort, same. Seemed to have a lot of side-by-side for a “fight” but this dance was fantastic. Very in sync, very in character, very sharp.

And we had some contestant group numbers! Finally!

Lex, Logan, and Kaylee Very interesting, but really obvious sync issues.

Koine, Kiki, Taylor and Mark This was stunning. FIrstly, it was pretty cool how the tones of their costumes change with the lighting. The choreography reflected the message wonderfully. Each dancer’s moves connected to the next. What was that flipping thing Mark and Kiki were doing? Or after that when Koine climbed on Kiki’s shoulders and they had to stand up? Whoa.

Why did they make Kaylee, Logan and Lex change outfits before coming on for elimination.

Bottom 3: Kaylee, Mark and Kiki. It’s Kiki’s first time in the bottom 3, so I’m not surprised he didn’t go home. It was Kaylee’s second straight week and so far whoever has been eliminated (sans Robert) were eliminated after appearing in the bottom twice in a row. Apparently Mark has the least votes which I’m quite surprised about becuase he has such a cool personality. Sucks to see him go. None of his routines with Comfort were really my favourite but I liked seeing him dance.
