A Strong Support
MANAGEMENT TEAM If you ask who watches Red Velvet from the closest, it’s definitely the management team. Here’s Red Velvet from the eyes of the management team, who is always by Red Velvet’s side and acts as a strong support for them.
Please introduce yourself. I’m under SM Entertainment’s management team, and I’ve been working as Red Velvet’s manager when they were getting ready for “Russian Roulette.” It’s been more than a year and a half since I’ve been with them.
You get to see and be with the members closer than anybody. What’s Red Velvet like in general? They’re a bit shy. It even took a bit of time for me to get close to them. Also, they’re very simple and sincere. They do their best in anything given to them. If I were to compare them with students, they would be hardworking model students. Also, they have a cute charm, and they take good care of the people around them.
While preparing for the concert, the management team must’ve focused on taking care of Red Velvet’s stamina and state a lot. Red Velvet are good at taking care of themselves but, for this concert, I also took extra good care of them. Red Velvet are the kind of people who push themselves forward even if they’re not at their best, so I focused on making them eat on time or getting them vitamins so that they could recharge themselves.
What did it feel like you to see Red Velvet perform “Red Room?” They’re quiet and gentle off-stage, but when they get on-stage, they expose the star quality hidden inside them to the fullest. So, there are times when I get surprised when I see them perform. During “Red Room,” I was backstage, but if I had time, I went out to see the performances. I teared up during the opening stages, even though I saw them for three whole days. It was really touching, and I still can’t forget the thrill that I felt back then.
What was it like during the wrap-up dinner after the concert? Were there any fun episodes? This wasn’t something that happened at the wrap-up dinner but, I remember something that Red Velvet said as we were moving to the wrap-up dinner venue. Out of all the people, I got chosen as the MC for the dinner. I was really nervous because this was an occasion where most of the staff who I prepared the concert with were gathered. While moving to the venue, Red Velvet gave me ideas of what I should say during the toast and helped me relax a lot. Even though the star of the dinner was Red Velvet, they took care of the nervous me. In the end, I said the words that we always say before going on stage. “Red! Velvet! Let’s! Boost! The Excitement!”
What did the members say during the wrap-up dinner? They kept saying things like, “We want to do it again,” “I wish I could have done better.” They learned what a concert is really like. (Laughs) While getting ready for the concert, the members were drained, saying things like they were tired. But at the wrap-up dinner, they were saying things like “It wasn’t that big of a deal, now that I think about it!”
How does Red Velvet usually spend their time backstage or in the dressing rooms? They usually listen to music or sleep. There was this one time when they were really into games. They laughed their lungs out while playing games like “I Am Ground.” Also, Yeri once spent her time filming fun videos with the other members using an app.
You’re Red Velvet’s manager, but the members said that you’re practically their older brother. Are there times when Red Velvet share their troubles with you? Yeah. Since I’m not perfect myself, even if it’s a problem that can’t be fixed, I tried to relate and listen to it. There are times when the members’ stamina are drained out, so in those times, I especially try to take care of what the members need more and try to cheer them up.
Lastly, leave a message for Red Velvet. You’ve done well from debut, and I’m so proud that you guys have successfully completed your first solo concert, which can also be a new leap forward. It’s so nice to see you guys grow step by step. I hope you guys can stay like this and do well without big trouble. Thank you for not being disappointed in me and for following me even though I scold or calm you guys down from time to time. In the letter you wrote to me before, you guys said, “If you have any troubles, tell us.” I really like how you guys always take care of the people around you. Let’s stay close like this in the future!
Move, Move and Act!
PERFORMANCE DIRECTOR Red Velvet, who’s well known for putting on difficult performances with perfect poker-faces, has a strong helping hand. Here’s the story from the performance director, someone who has been with Red Velvet from debut, and someone who takes Red Velvet’s charm up to another level with performances which brings every detail from head to toe to life.
Red Velvet is well-known for their unique and cute choreography. Also, it’s famous for being difficult. If there’s a specific word that could describe Red Velvet’s performance, what would it be? Red Velvet’s choreography is powerful, and has no breaks in between. Its consisted of unique moves that stand out and also complicated moves that are very intricate. Its primary characteristic is that it expresses Red Velvet’s fresh and girlish sides.
If you were to explain the detail of the most iconic move of Red Velvet’s choreography, what would it be? “Rookie” is a very fast paced choreography with constantly changing moves, and its point choreography involves a lot of hand movement. Red Velvet had a lot of fun dancing with one fist to their face and doing the move where they had to groom their face like a cat, and the public enjoyed their cuteness.
Generally, most of Red Velvet’s signature choreography are “Red.” Could you explain the point of “Velvet” choreography? Compared to “Red” songs, “Velvet” songs are lyrical and poetic, so I try to express them by using body rolls or the pelvis to express them softly and flexibly. Also, another difference “Velvet” choreography have compared to the “Red” ones are that they have moves that are restricted and leave something hanging to spice up the song.
The concert set-list must have been hard to take on because it was centered around the dance stages. Did anybody struggle during practice? How was the atmosphere during practice and were there any fun episodes that happened during then? Because we had such a short time to practice and because it was their first concert, I’m sure all of the members would have felt quite pressured. But nevertheless, Red Velvet relied on each other and had fun, and practiced with a smile on their face. Also, after the group practices were over, they stayed after until dawn to practice on parts that they thought needed to be perfected on their own. Like this, we all practiced quite fervently.
Could you tell us how each of the members dance? First off, Irene is a veteran when it comes to taking on choreography. Even though she has a small figure, her moves are big, powerful and flexible.
When it comes to Seulgi, she has very precise moves and she executes them cleanly.
Wendy’s moves become even cleaner with time, and she does the choreography as exactly as they were taught. Normally, when you perform on a lot of stages, the moves naturally change into the dancer’s own style, but Wendy overcomes the pressure she has about dancing with endless practice.
Joy’s biggest strength is her feminine silhouette. She always studies how she could use her own strength to make the moves look even more charming. Personally, I look forward to Joy’s potential the most.
Yeri picks up choreography the quickest. She catches the choreographer’s intentions first and expresses them well in her own style.
The solo stages on “Be Natural” were quite impressive. The fans went crazy over them too. What did you think of this stage? The members would’ve feel pressured over the fact that they had to fill up a whole stage with such a short amount of practice, but to cover that, the members practiced a lot on their own too. I felt really proud of this stage because you could clearly see how much the members had grown.
What was the most touching thing that Red Velvet had said to you before the concert? “Thank you for being with us from start to finish. It felt nice to have someone to rely on.” I think I was able to gain strength and participate in getting ready for the concert after they told me that.
Could you tell us what you think the three best stages of the concert were and why? First, I liked how the opening stages, “Red Dress” and “Happily Ever After” were constructed. The performance which used the bed and the pop-up book in order to replicate that musical-like concept was fantastic. The members and dancers’ acting skills were impressive too. And, thanks to the colorful set and costumes, those stages were able to become the fanciest and the most intense opening stages ever.
Secondly, I was impressed by “Zoo.” The audience’s fervid reaction completed this very exciting stage.
Last but not the least, I can’t leave “Be Natural” out. From the start, where the members did their solo stages, to the end, I was nervous but also proud of Red Velvet. I tried to highlight each members’ individual dance styles through the choreography, and since those moves stole the stage, this stage was a very meaningful and unforgettable stage in many aspects.
You’ve been Red Velvet ever since they debuted, which in other words, means that you’ve seen how they’ve grown up close. In what moments can you feel how much they’ve grown? When they tell us what kinds of music, choreography style they want to do, and what direction they want Red Velvet to take. Also, when I see them discover what they lack in and what they need to learn and work on that themselves, I feel like they are really growing as artists. I think I’m growing even more attached to Red Velvet after seeing them work so hard like this.
Could you tell us what you feel like after successfully wrapping up Red Velvet’s first concert, “Red Room?” I remember that while getting ready for this concert, I also relied a lot on the members and that we did our best to get ready for this like a family. There were a lot of staff members who took part in “Red Room,” such as the choreography team, directing team and management team, and I think it was because of their fantastic skills and strong teamwork that “Red Room” was able to become such a masterpiece. It was an honor for me to work on such a great project like this.
Lastly, leave a message for Red Velvet, who has successfully put on their first concert. It still feels like a dream to actually do the concert that you guys have talked about ever since you debuted. This wouldn’t have been possible without you guys, and I’m so glad and thankful that you guys have always been by my side. I hope that Red Velvet’s positive energy would be known to more people, and be loved more. I know that you guys will become good people and good artists that will last in people hearts for a long time. Let’s be happy kids!
