The red flash of Mishka’s tongue drew Serif’s sharp gaze. A shiver rolled down his spine in time with the monster’s deep rumbling growl. He didn’t like the look upon the other’s wolfish face. Lacking much experience with the blood of fellow hunters, Serif hadn’t the faintest clue what it must have tasted like, though that expression gave him an idea.
Mishka’s words confused him, bafflement twisting quickly into fury.
Was he taunting him?
In spite of the ragged hole torn into his neck, it was the treachery which truly hurt the most. Further insult was salt in the wound. He cursed the beast in response, and though it was in his native tongue there was no mistaking the vehemence in his voice.
“Why are you doing this?” he hissed, eyes shining with betrayal.
He gripped his saif tighter, his glove squelching. Already the blood from his wound had run its course down the length of his arm.
“I had thought you were different. I had wanted to believe you were above this.”
He began to slowly circle the other as he spoke, keeping his distance where he knew he held the advantage. This was far from his first time facing off against another hunter, if one could call this monstrosity that anymore. He knew how to play, and he knew how to do it well.
‘A monster is a monster,’ he thought, another pang of agony stabbing him in the chest. How could he have been so stupid?
