A Year in the Making

I realize I should have begun this over a year ago since that is how long I have been preparing for this trip and I've likely missed some vital moments that I would have liked to document. When I heard about the program, it was one of those moments when you know it's something you have to do despite the obstacles in the way--and I instantly thought of at least six. After reading further into the program I decided that perceived obstacles of cost, distance, if I could graduate on time, missing opportunities, medical needs and what to do with my hair were all mole hills I'd ballooned into mountains that needed some deflating. While the last obstacle seems miniscule, after enduring sixteen conscious years of my mother imposing the standards on black women's hair and being aware of the double-consciousness of how it's viewed by others, it was a very daunting task.

The next few posts with explain the year up to this moment and the subsequent posts will document everything beyond it.
