As I re-read a LOT of my favourite fics, i’m going to start a thing called ‘currently rereading’ where I talk about the fic i’m rereading and why i chose to go back and reread it! So to start us off…
Pretty Woman Author: triddlegrl Rating: NC17 Summary: The new improved memoir of Kurt Hummel, former escort extraordinaire. You know that story about the pretty prostitute who gets saved by the dashing business man? This isn’t that story. This is the story about the pretty prostitute who saved himself.
This fic is pretty old - over 4 years since the first update - yet the connection created between our boys feels timeless. The dynamic and the deep, conflicted relationship is so layered and detailed that it’s pretty heart wrenching. Kurt is also written brilliantly, brave and unapologetic. There’s so many layers to the fic, from Kurt and Blaine’s friendship and denying their feelings to one another to the deeply detailed original characters.
There are moments in this fic that make you cry, that make you anrgy, that make you happy. There are plenty of moments were you just want to bang Kurt and Blaine’s heads together to perhaps knock some sense into them. But that’s what makes it so great. Kurt’s never written cheaply, the prostitution side of the fic is never written with the cliches that you may possibly expect. Blaine’s characterisation is so accurate, his support and constant need to please others is so so heartbreaking that you’re constantly wanting him to just take something for himself for once. The fic’s themes are naturally quite dark (there are a few triggers, but triddlegrl warns when present) and they easily could’ve not been given the justice they deserve - however, due to the quality of writing, amount of detail and the characterisation that triddlegrl has put into this story, that’s definitely not the case with Pretty Woman.
It’s a long fic, took me a good few evenings to re-read - quality AND quantity. It has everything, moments of fluff, a heck load of smut and a bucket load of angst. It’s a brilliant tale of highs and lows about two lost best friends and the long road towards where they should be.
Lima/Heights Junction Author: quizasvivamos Rating: PG13 Word count: 42k Summary: Just as summer vacation is winding down, a fire leaves the kids of Lima Heights without a high school to return to. While necessary repairs are being made, its rival school McKinley High opens its doors to the students of the adjacent town. An inevitable clashing takes place, and tensions run high, but can they find a common ground to overcome their differences to survive this temporary hardship?
Try The Swing Author: imaginentertain Rating: NC17 Word count: 39k Summary: Kurt and Blaine have survived a lot. A Vegas wedding to a stranger, a cross-country journey of discovery, and coast-to-coast separation. They came through all that to a second marriage, one that has been happy and successful for two years. The next logical step is parenthood. Only kids are rarely logical.
Halloween fic rec, day 6!
Big Moon Rising Author: rainjoy Rating: NC17 Word count: N/A Summary: The gay teenage werewolf thing just got a hell of a lot more interesting.
Why I’m recommending this fic:
I could sing praise for rainjoy for absolute years - their writing is a gift to this fandom and this fic is no exception! Rainjoy have such a clear grasp on Kurt and Blaine’s character’s that they shine through no matter what trope or concept put on them - and in this case, werewolves! The writing and storyline is flawlessly executed and conjures so many visuals that you’re completely engrossed in the world created. The idea of werewolves is nailed in the actual manner that they’re wolves and not the cliched idea (as it often written as) - the wolves are written so well that you just know they’re Kurt and Blaine. It’s the best werewolf fic I’ve had the joy of reading, it constantly leaves you wanting more and gripped to the very last word.
It Must Be Love Author: lovely_sparkle Rating: NC17 Word count: 72k Summary: It's 1987, and Blaine just wants to fit in with the cool kids at school. So he wears trendy clothes even though they aren't his style, saves his singing and dancing for his bedroom, and keeps his sexuality a secret by dating a popular cheerleader. But everything changes when teen sensation Kurt Hummel, lead singer of the latest New Wave craze Social Heap, enters his world. And little does Kurt know that his world is about to be turned upside-down, too.
Things I Cannot Change Author: beautifulwhatsyourhurry Rating: NC17 Word count: 54k Summary: Kurt begins his junior year at McKinley, fully prepared for something better than the torment he has suffered as an underclassman. However, when he befriends Blaine Anderson, a shy transfer student, he might not be able to handle everything God throws at him.
The Danger Inside of Me Author: aworldoflis Rating: NC17 Word count: 124k Summary: For over three years, Blaine has kept his HIV positive status from Kurt, and after Kurt finds out in the worst possible way, he and Blaine have to try to find a new balance in their lives. But when the guy responsible for Blaine's seroconversion shows up again, Kurt realizes the clock is ticking if he's serious about getting Blaine back.
