Fruitvale Station special screening and panel discussion
July 19, 2013 – PHILADELPHIA, PA In conjunction with Landmark Theaters, Blues Babe Foundation and Councilman David Oh’s Black Film Advisory Committee, Tabb Management will be hosting a special screening of Fruitvale Station on Monday, July 22 at 6:30pm followed by an in-theater panel discussion with some of the Delaware Valley’s most prominent and dedicated community activists, including attorney Michael Coard and anti-oppression lecturer Conrad Moore. The purpose of this panel is to encourage community members to rally around the issues being addressed in the movie, its implications, intent, and influence.
Fruitvale Station follows the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who was fatally shot by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California, in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009 on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station. Grant was lying down, handcuffed and unarmed at the time of the shooting. Grant’s case sparked outrage in the community and raised questions of police brutality and racial profiling. Fruitvale Station chronicles the last 24 hours of Oscar Grant’s life.
