Security in-a-box is a collection of guides and free tools to secure your computer, protect your information or maintain the privacy of your Internet communication. It was created to meet the digital security and privacy needs of advocates and human rights defenders.

Not that the NSA would be very excited reading my emails discussing bush walks and waterfalls or the joy of jagermeister and drum and bass. But I don't see how govt.s around the world should be able to access everything we have ever done without even notifying the courts of their intent.

The most sensitive thing I might ever write about via email would be likely someting of a personal, medical or family nature. Discussing a death in the family springs to mind having been a recent experience. Discussing private medical data with loved ones, notifying family of deteriorating condition and symptoms and then the ultimate demise. All stored in my email account somewhere in the ether.

We know the govt. are incompetant, we know private contractors are involved. From the heros like Snowden and Manning we know the data is available to other organisations and countries gotv.s and little oversight about who can access what data.

Now I don't assume that some NSA geek or MI5 recruit gets to poor though my old emails in the name of national security.

But they are stored.

Everyones is. Along with public media posts, texts and calls and the metadata content of where, when and who it was all with.

I don't know maybe it should be stored so that it can be trawled to combat serious crime. I have nothing to hide so what is there to fear?

But who is to say that one day a political party I support will be red flagged because they don't tow the company line of the establishment?

Or a donation to a foreign cause like building schools in Afghanistan won't be deemed to be supporting terrorism?

We don't dictate the rules and we have no control over who within the 'system' can access our priavate data.

So sites like Security In A Box are there to teach us.

Step by step guides to take back our privacy and keep our private messages confidential.

Maybe it's not worth it unless you are involved in investigative journalism and need to protect yourself and your sources.

I don't know but at least it gives us a choice to protect ourselves and our data from prying eyes.
