Small Gray Flexi Trilobite Flexible Toy

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Pros:

Very wiggly. I had a somewhat disappointing experience with a 3-D printed stim toy I got in the past (didn't review it bc I got it for Christmas and didn't know where it came from) so I was worried that the movement of it would be stiff and not fluid. I'm so glad I ordered it anyway because this is the opposite of that. It moves so nicely, it almost looks alive with how fluid the motion is.

Seems sturdy. When it arrived it was a little concerned about how delicate it looked but once I started playing with it I was no longer worried because it was quite resilient.

Good size. I was worried it might be too big or too small but it's just the right size to play with, you can easily use one or two hands without it feeling too fiddly or hard to control.

Smooth. Sometimes 3-D printed items can be rough, but I believe the surface of this was sanded. It has a little texture but not enough to make your hands uncomfortable.

Cons:

Can be noisy. When the plastic rubs against itself it makes a rustling noise. This can be reduced by playing with the tool slowly, but fast stimming with it will be quite loud. The noise is satisfying and could be part of the stimming experience, but it wouldn't be great for a classroom or business meeting setting.

Irresistible to cats. My cat is obsessed with the noise and movement of this stim tool. I offered it to her to sniff and she grabbed it in her teeth and ran away with it and I had to chase her to get it back. Every time I bring it out she stares at it. I would recommend storing them out of reach of cats as I'm not sure if they're cat-safe, the small plastic pieces could break off with rough play and get swallowed.

Overall:

Great, well-made, and low-price stim tool! I would definitely recommend this shop for 3-D printed items, I got two (only ordered one but they sent me an extra by accident I think) and one of them had a slight printing mistake on the underside but it's a lot better than 3-D printed items I've received in the past and I can't really complain since it was extra. I can see myself using it quite a bit.

Stim Toy Feature: Power Schnur

[Photo of a bright green rubbery thing best described as noodle-shaped (like spaghetti, or a pool noodle), about a centimeter thick and about a cubit long. It is arranged as if tied in a loose knot.]

Stim type: tactile

Other senses stimulated: visual, somewhat auditory depending on use, possibly also somewhat proprioceptive depending on use (serious stretch though)

These things are, to my knowledge, very new. I have only seen them in a German context, where they are called ‘Power Schnur’ (with ‘Schnur’ meaning something like ‘cord’ or ‘string’). I’d love to let you know what to search for in English to find this, but I honestly have no idea.

They seem to be available in two varieties: the awfully-named ‘Girl Power’ variety (which is glittery), and the less offensively named ‘Night Power’ variety, which glows in the dark. Both varieties are available in several colors. I went for the glow-in-the-dark green, because glow-in-the-dark is both awesomely stimmy and really useful - whether you’re in the dark because it’s bedtime or because you’re overstimmed.

I’ve only had it for a short while, but I can say already that these things are awesome. I can’t recommend them highly enough. And they’re extremely affordable - again, I have no idea how available they are elsewhere (or under what name), but I saw them on eBay for about 1€-2€. Evidently they’re also available in stores for only about 20 cents more, though I’m not totally sure which stores.

The rubber is very soft (but not slimy) and very stretchy. The feel of it in my hands at first reminded me of putty, except that it... stays in one piece, which can be stretched out of its shape but always returns to it. It’s extremely stretchy: in its natural state it’s about the length of my forearm and about a centimeter thick, but it stretches out to two meters. That’s the length of a fairly tall adult man!

It also stretches extremely easily. I was honestly expecting more resistance, from just seeing it on the internet - words like ‘power’ being used, and all - but it takes pretty much no muscles at all to stretch it. That said, if it’s folded double (or more) the resistance increases, if that’s what you want. Other things you can do with it include:

just sort of hold it between your thumb and your hand, and flip your hand back and forth, swinging it against your palm and the back of your hand by turns

hold one end and then swing it around in a circle really really fast, where it will lengthen, and then let it wrap adorably around your wrist (listen this thing is a Clearly Alive Adorable Pet, I just haven’t found a good name for it yet because all I can think of is Noodle. You know what, that’s its name now. Say hello to Noodle)

All visual things aside, and all thwippy flying through the air noises also aside, Noodle is a really great fidget - one of the best I’ve found so far. Seriously, I cannot recommend these things too highly.

Also, the fact that Noodle glows in the dark and doesn’t require careful storage means that it is one of those rare toys that can be actually taken into bed! And stimmed with if being understimmed is a problem you’re having with falling asleep! In theory, anyway. In practice, while I’ve done this a few times and it has worked as far as it went, I found I could not actually sleep with Noodle in my bed - partly because its glow was a bit too much to sleep with, and partly because all this hyperempathy or object affection or whatever the technical term is for Noodle being a Clearly Alive Adorable Pet has resulted in my Knowing that Noodle does not want to sleep in my bed with me. Noodle likes to play with me but would prefer to sleep alone.

(just because I ascribe personalities and emotions to things doesn’t mean I get to choose those personalities and emotions for my convenience)

Anyway, Noodle is great, and if you can find one of these power cord things (whatever name they may go by in your local area) they are both cheap and awesome and you should definitely try them out.

Important update:

I’ve now had Noodle for long enough that I’m able to judge its flaws as well. The biggest problem: these things do get dirty very quickly and very easily, to the point where it actually affects the texture, and I have no idea how to clean them or whether it’s even possible. I tried water, which semi-temporarily gave Noodle the Sticky Rubber texture that some people apparently like but I really, really don’t; it was not very effective. I’ve considered whether oil would work better, but haven’t been willing yet to actually try it out.

This means that Noodle has now become a little bit gross and has mostly outlived its usefulness, which is never good and even less good because it is a Clearly Alive Adorable Pet! I can still play with it sometimes, but definitely less, and the dirtiness is definitely bothering me. Trying to look at it rationally, the expense was probably worth it anyway, even if it was just for a few months - but I can’t just dispose of a Clearly Alive Adorable Pet, which means even if I don’t find a way to clean it and stop playing with it entirely, I’m going to be keeping this thing for ever and ever and won’t be able to ever replace it with another toy of the same kind, financially worth it or not.
