Larvacea are small, free-swimming tunicates who seldom reach more than one centimetre long.
When they're hungry, which is always, they have to build a huge, all enveloping structure called the "house" out of their own mucus. It filters out plankton while the Larvacea resides at its centre.
After a few hours the house gets clogged up with food particles and sinks to the bottom of the sea. Denizens of the deep are grateful, for the house is a blob of mucus covered in food from the upper, sun-touched areas.
