The Clippers, Taeping and Ariel participated in the Great Tea race of 1866 which departed from China and arrived in London 99 days later.
The Taeping pipped Ariel to the post by 28 minutes in this exciting duel.

The two "tea clippers", Ariel and Taeping, racing for London after coming from Foochow, China with full loads of tea. After 99 days at sea, the two ships were only 10 minutes apart when they docked. The clipper races became a nice side activity as there was a little prize money for the fastest.

Tea clipper races had by this time become a tradition in the tea trade between Britain and China. The winning ship earned an extra pound sterling for each tonne of tea delivered and the captain was rewarded with a commission from the profits of the ship's cargo.
