Max pushes open the door to the bathroom and locks it. It’s one of those one room bathrooms with a lock, and thank god, because she is going to have a breakdown, she can feel it, it’s already coursing through her veins and she does not want anyone to be able to get in. She had to get in here, she didn't want strangers around her, because she doesn’t trust them, doesn’t trust any of them. Chloe is the only one she trusts, and she needs her. But Chloe isn’t here. It feels like she’s dead again, dead and gone and she’s all alone again, like she was in the Dark Room and in the storm.
Why did she go out without Chloe? They always go together. Go everywhere together. But she hadn’t thought… it was just a fast morning trip into the nearby mall, just a short walk away from the hotel they were staying at. Chloe had still been tired, and she’d wanted to go in real fast because she knew there was a store in that strip mall that sold the old kind of film she needed for her camera. They had promised each other they’d be together forever, but like, obviously they’d sometimes be apart for brief moments. But now Max can’t take it. She needs Chloe. She can't take this separation from her, can't feel safe without her, can't feel okay without her. She left in the early morning, it must be close to the afternoon now but she feels like she’s been away from Chloe for five years again, no an eternity. She feels scared, terrified, trapped and alone as if she is back in the Dark Room with him in a reality where Chloe is dead and gone forever.
She is reaching in her bag now for her phone, but for some reason she can’t find it. Which only makes the panic worse. If she doesn’t have her phone, how will she reach Chloe? She’ll be trapped in the Dark Room with Jefferson forever. She digs around desperately and still can’t find it. She hears someone beginning to whimper, realizes it’s her.
All of this, because she went into that elevator. And Jefferson walked into the elevator too… no it wasn’t him. He hadn’t even looked like him. But it’s what her mind had seen. Jefferson there with his needle. Even if it wasn’t him it was a strange man she didn’t know and who knew what he might try and do to her with her alone and trapped with him? She’d hit her rewind power, without thought until the man had been rewinded out of the elevator and far away from her. And then she had just run. Until she ended up in here.
Finally, her hand finds her phone. But now the next challenge is calling Chloe. Her hands are shaking so bad she can’t do it. It’s like when you’re in a dream and you can’t make yourself do anything, can’t make yourself move out of the path of the car, out of the path of the train tracks. It seems to take forever until she finally manages to get her fingers to hit Chloe’s little photo and for it to actually start calling her number, and then the rings that follow seem to go on forever, even though it must only be one or two rings before Chloe answers it.
“Chloe!?” Max cries out, frantic. Some far away part of her knows where she is, that she’s in a bathroom, not in the Dark Room, but she feels like she is, it’s all she sees right now, the Dark Room, him, coming at her with the needle, and that’s all that matters, all that is real. “Chloe, I need you, I need you,” She’s crying. “Please, Chloe, I’m scared I’m…I’m so scared.” Is it just the photos he wants of her? He’s talking of her innocence and purity now, how even though she’s been with Chloe, she’s still so pure and innocent for his photos. Does he just want her image of that, or does he want to take it from her? She can feel the needle go into her neck, it stings, it hurts. She can't focus, can't think right. Can't rewind. Can't escape. Can't push him away with rewinds. He’s drugged her, what else can she think he wants to do to her? It’s getting impossible to talk now. She’s having trouble breathing. The drug is in her system, making it so hard to talk. But she has to try and talk. She needs Chloe. Needs Chloe here with her... Needs her to hold her. To protect her from him. Needs to call for her, before he takes her phone and destroys it like he has her journal. Before he hurts her more. “Chloe, help me.”
Max’s head rests against the glass as she watches the world outside blur into nothing.
She... feels nothing.
Numb.
It’s so strange and out of place to feel this way when the weight of possibly hundreds of deaths is on her shoulders right now, but she supposes that’s how it’s going to be for now -- it’s a cycle, just like it was back when she was plucked from her sleepy hometown and dropped down right in the middle of chaotic Seattle, missing her partner in crime (and just about everything else she knew). Numbness comes first, then it gives way to the weight of realization shifting into place, obliterating everything else in its path. She supposes she should appreciate the first ring of hell for what it is, since the next one is definitely going to be much worse.
But that goes against the very nature of numbness. She can’t appreciate it because she can’t feel. She doesn’t even care that the less-than-perfect roads and Chloe’s less-than-careful driving causes the whole truck to shake, making her head bang against the glass uncomfortably, repeatedly. Even without the numbness, she supposes it would be stupid to be bothered about something so small, anyway.
They sit in complete silence. Chloe’s truck, for as much of a piece of crap it is, does have a working radio, but it doesn’t feel appropriate to listen to music right now. Besides, there’s a small chance that while flicking through stations, they might come across a news report on Max’s fucking storm, and she definitely doesn’t want to hear that right now.
It’s so quiet, in fact, that Max only realizes about an hour in that she doesn’t even know where Chloe’s driving them. When she does, though, she still doesn’t ask -- maybe Chloe doesn’t know either, and maybe she doesn’t want to know.
After what could easily have been either hours or a few seconds (time doesn’t mean shit anymore to Max -- it’s all a blur), the truck stops. Chloe pulls into the parking lot of a dusty-looking roadside motel, haphazardly stops the truck, and kills the engine. Max’s head remains resting against the glass for a moment longer, before she realizes she should probably move to get out.

Max: Are Emojis still banned? (pleading face emoji)
Chloe: YES. no emoji!!! i'm not decoding 100 pictures like some kind of ancient egyptian
Max: (broken heart, sob, cry, broken heart, cold sweat, and crying cat face emoji) I don't think u need to be an ancient Egyptian to decode how I'm feeling right now with these emojis Chloe (broken heart, cold sweat followed by a big broken heart emoji)
Chloe: i'm blocking u, i did nothing to deserve this torment
Max: (broken heart and sob emoji) Can't we parley on it? Maybe I have an allowance on emojis. What do you want in return?
Max: And you can't block me Chloe Price. That would really break my (heart face emoji)
Chloe: i'm also pretty sure this piece of junk phone doesn't actually have a blocking feature
Chloe: i'll give 2 emojis a day in exchange for one hour of listening to whatever music i want
Max: (heart eyes emoji) Arr you got yourself a deal! And we need to upgrade you to the 21st century you know you can get on the internet on phones now right?
Max: How can I bump myself up to 4 emojis in a day two isn't really enough for me.
Chloe: that sounds like witchcraft. expensive witchcraft. 4 emojis is a pretty big credit increase
Max: well lucky for you I can perform some serious witchcraft. what would it take for you to increase my emoji credit? it's killing me right now to not use any more but I have to respect the pirate code. im willing to maybe do illegal things to increase my limit. like I'd break into another pool right now just to get to 4 emojis
Chloe: i need at least one hilarious love poem with well utilized puns. those are my terms and they will not change.
Max: Jeez I thought you’d jump at me volunteering to break into the pool again
Max: But challenge accepted
Max: Damn this is really hard
Chloe: i think i’ll hold that idea hostage for when you inevitably beg me to up your emoji usage to 8
Max: Hey I'm not giving up! I'm getting my 4 emojis tonight!
Chloe: i’ll wait patiently
Max: I'm not just a photographer you know. I have a diary full of writing. I've got this.
Chloe: do you write about me?? it better all be good, that shit will probably get published after you die and everyone wants to know the woman behind the selfies
Max: I could give you the advanced reader's copy but nothing's for free. For the the right price I'd let you take a peak
Max: Okay I got one small one!
Max: Do you have a library Card Chloe?
Chloe: do i look like i read
Max: Do you have a library card because I've been checkin you out
Max: brb while i jump out the window
Chloe: oh my god
Chloe: that earned you at least 3
Max: There's more where that came from (flushed emoji)
Chloe: give me another, i’m just high enough for this to be effective
Chloe: affective???
Chloe: whatever grammar isn’t real
Max: You know what IS real though?
Chloe: your sick dance moves?
Max: My love for you (smiling face with 3 hearts emoji)
Max: You and I make a great pear
Max: I cherry-ish you
Chloe: holy shit
Chloe: okay okay you can have 4
Max: May the fourth be with me
Chloe: neeeeerd
Max: Like you're not a nerd science geek.
Chloe: i cancel it out by being punk enough that most old people think i worship satan
Max: You know what I worship?
Chloe: retro cameras
Max: I worship the ship that crashed me into YOU
Chloe: i feel like this is begging for a titanic reference
Max: We're in a titanic pickle here, but lettuce romain calm, help will turnip soon
Chloe: perfection
Max: just so we're clear if we were on that wooden door I'd share it with you.
Chloe: i think that’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever said to me
Chloe: hold on i’ll mark this with a poem for you
Chloe: blood is red, cyanosis is blue, i get tachycardia when i think of you
Max: You ARE a nerd I just had to look up cyanosis AND tachycardia. But I loved it (heart emoji)
Max: I'd share that door with you until the sun goes down and up again
Max: We'd have to keep ourselves warm on that door out in the ocean so you'd learn how HOT I really am (fire emoji)
Max: I went over my emoji limit. forgive me for my sin I'm on FIRE today
Chloe: you’re lucky i like you
Chloe: it’s good you’re willing to let me on the door, because according to the second law of thermodynamics, you’re supposed to share your hotness with me
Max: You're lucky I always remain pawsitive
Max: Looking up all these words is so much work I'm even hotter than usual tonight.
Chloe: i would stick to you like glu-cose
Max: I would stick to you like a sticker sticks on paper
Chloe: i’d say just default to thinking i’m hilarious but it’s good for your brain to learn new words
Chloe: are you my appendix? because i don’t understand how you work but this feeling in my stomach makes me want to take you out
Max: I would count to 69 with you.
Max: I gotta go bye
Chloe: no come back
Chloe: chemists like to do it on the table periodically
Max: i can't i'm dissolving
Chloe: but we have such chemistry together
Max: maybe in 69 more seconds
Max: gotta go bye
Chloe: you’re adorable
Chloe: i bet you’re like calcium bicarbonate — if i get you wet, the reaction will be explosive
Chloe: god i can’t believe i just typed that with a straight face
Max: I'm sorry the old Max can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, 'cause she's dead
Chloe: did you just quote taylor swift
Max: Why didn't the vampire attack Taylor Swift? She had bad blood
Chloe: i hate how funny i found that
Max: I need help cooling down after all that. My face is so red and burning so bad I might need someone to put me out. I think I need the fire department
Max: do you think if I call they'll be able to get here in sixty nine seconds I don't have much time left
Chloe: i think if you call the right number, they should, but they’ll probably answer with a greeting that makes them sound like a stripper service
Max: i guess the next best question is what should I call you?
Max: So they'll know who I want
Chloe: H2-Hoe
Chloe: do you know how long i sat here trying to figure out how to make a science based stripper name
Max: I think it's a certain amount of seconds
Chloe: i think it was a solid minute but pot makes time feel even more fucked than it already is
Max: Hey Chloe... they say I did something bad
Max: Then why's it feel so good?
Max: Most fun I ever had
Max: And I'd do it over and over
Max: And over again if I could
Max: It just felt so good, good
Max: oh sorry just pasted that by accident I meant to send that to H2-Hoe
Chloe: you’re a menace
Max: the phantom menace actually
Chloe: you would choose a shitty prequel
Max: hey I love the prequels I don't care what anyone says they're good movies. You know what my favourite scene is?
Max: you'll never guess
Max: i'll start by saying I have the high ground so guessing might be risky
Chloe: I’d have to remember anything about these movies to guess
Chloe: if it was anything related to jar jar, you’re getting dumped
Max: Well I'll tell you anyway because it doesn't matter if you don't remember. So here's my secret. I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth. Just like YOU.
Chloe: did you just use Star Wars to flirt with me
Max: did you just use Star Wars to flirt back with me
Max: NERD
Max: hey Chloe when you can text me back I have something important to tell you
Chloe: what's up
Max: So I wanted to set things straight with you...
Max: I'm not
Chloe: lmao i think this is the best one yet
Max: you're the syrup to my waffle
Max: and I love you a waffle lot
Chloe: if you were a fruit, you'd be a fineapple
Max: (laughing cat emoji) let's live apple-y ever after
Chloe: call me ariel bc i want to be part of your world
Max: then I guess I'm a murderer because I drowned the competition
Chloe: do you like sleeping?
Max: yes...
Max: you feeling sheepy chloe?
Chloe: ... a little, but i was thinking if we both like it, we should do it together sometime
Max: (flushed emoji) am I high? Or did my love for you just lift me off the ground?
Max: I can't even reach the bed anymore but I can reach the stars
Chloe: if i had a star for every time you brightened my day, i'd have a whole galaxy
Max: do you believe in the big bang theory? because i'd like to bang you
Max: gotta go bye
Chloe: lmao oh come on that one was tame
Max: oh deer this is so embarrassing
Chloe: can i be the phasor to your electron and take you to an excited state?
Chloe: a phasor is just a fancy angular equation dealing with mass and frequency, in case you gotta look that one up
Max: why am I so tingly right now reading all this?
Max: oh my arm fell asleep
Max: chloe this is seriously starting to overwhelm me. i'm overflowing with potential energy
Max: where are you rn I'm a bomb and I'm about to explode. unless you put me out
Chloe: hahaha i'd say just come to the garage but i think that i'd probably get in trouble for bringing explosive energy into a place with so many flammable liquids
Max: you saying you don't want to go down in flames with me?
Chloe: i try not to take burning passion quite so literally
Max: well I do. I like setting fires around so it feels like we're literally in hell. it's good to keep the bigots scared (smiling imp emoji)
Chloe: who knew max caulfield was such a devilish pyromaniac
Max: there's a lot you don't know about me chloe price. I hope that didn't scare you off
Chloe: i live for mysteries
Max: i have a particular set of skills after all
Max: Skills I have acquired over the last five years
Chloe: what skills are these
Max: that's for me to know and you to dot dot dot
Max: hey chloe.... if we were in the hunger games I just want you to know I'd eat those berries with you if we were the final two
Chloe: if we were in the hunger games, i'd hope we'd start a revolution before either of us ended up in the arena.
Max: if we burn they burn with us... that's just how I like things. hot and explosive
Chloe: i'm seeing a theme. you really do spread your hotness everywhere
Max: what if I told you... that you're even hotter than Trinity?
Max: you better know who she is or you're losing all your geek cred with me
Max: hey chloe don't wantcha for the weekend, don't wantcha for a night, I'm only interested if I can have you for life
Chloe: of course i know who trinity is and i refuse to believe I’m hotter than her
Chloe: every time you send me a lyric, i write down a reminder to better your tastes
Chloe: only i can’t read my own handwriting and I’m probably going to forget this in the morning because i ate a brownie and everything is fuzzy
Max: Am I hotter than Trinity Chloe?
Chloe: ... yes
Max: Are you cereal?
Chloe: yes
Chloe: i’d probably be fruit loops
Chloe: badumtsh
Max: I don't really care about the fruit loops right now. Or you coming for my taste in music. Or that you just ate an edible. I want to talk about how much hotter I am than Trinity. Not that I think I am. You know nobody ever showed any interest in me before. Not that I was interested in anyone. But to go from that to suddenly being hotter than Trinity that's pretty hardcore. Its kinda unBEElievable
Chloe: people in Seattle are dumb af if they didn’t show interest in you
Chloe: i didn’t suggest walks on the beach that my parents talked about as romantic hot spots because i liked you as a friend growing up, u no that right
Max: Well I mean I wasn't interested in anyone in Seattle. But it was hard not to notice everyone else was interested in everyone else.
Max: Wait Chloe are you..
Chloe: you spent five years not interested in anyone??? for real???
Chloe: altho if you missed my having a mad crush on you back then i think it makes more sense
Max: I'm cereal. I mean I thought people were cute now and then. I remember thinking skater boys were cute. A girl here and there in a TV show or movie.. But honestly I never felt anything more than just surface level oh they're cute. Until YOU came back into my life again. That's how special you are Chloe. And proof you're hotter than Trinity(edited)
Max: I never noticed. I feel bad I didn't... but you were my best friend and I loved you more than anyone. Even if I didn't feel those things yet. But I think there were maybe moments I look back on. That felt more intense than just a normal bff friendship you know?
Chloe: skater boys never know how to shower. I’m glad to know that I’m you’re sexual awakening though, that is def flattering, and I’ll take it
Chloe: And yeah I didn’t know i was crushing hard either. I didn’t even know I liked chicks until uhh...
Chloe: fuck like three years ago now i guess
Chloe: just before i met Rachel
Chloe: but i thought back on it a lot and was like “shit price you were hella obvious you gay dweeb”
Max: yeah I don't think I'd have actually been a fan of skater boys after all. I'm not a fan of not showering and I've smelled some of the men's body washes at the mall and they smell like crap so even if they did shower, no thanks!
Max: you know it makes me blush with words like sexual awakening. I feel like.... I mean this is all new to me! but it was you who brought it all out. I might be a Lesbean (get it?) or my sexuality might be Chloe Price. because I don't see how I'd ever notice any other woman but you. But yeah I've kinda realized I would think boys were cute but not like hot like say Trinity. Who you are still hotter than btw.
Max: I knew you loved Rachel... I just knew from the way you talked to her when I saw that picture of you both. You know I was jealous. Your.... your mom even noticed. Not that I think she knew completely why.
Max: You know.. actually... one person had interest in me... just one.. Warren... he really liked me. I knew that. And I was kinda confused I didn't like him back that way. He was a total geek like me, more actually. So many at blackwell noticed he liked me. People kept saying things. But I didn't feel the same. He wanted me to go to this drive in movie with him and I turned him down. Maybe that was the first sign. He was an actual good guy and hell you remember the beat down he gave Nathan. I almost told him about my powers before you.
Max: And you know, after YOU texted him about the kiss HE texted me back saying you sounded hot and I should go to the drive in with YOU.
Max: God I miss him. And I wish I could have met Rachel. Even if it meant you were with Rachel and not me.
Chloe: men are gross, thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Chloe: i find labels to be overrated. i figure i like who i like, yknow? fuck putting something to it. i definitely cared about rachel, but i don't know how she felt about me. we never really got into it. she was always too focused on other stuff, i guess. mom didn't like her much, but she fucking adooooored you, so i'm not surprised she brought her up. i hope she didn't talk too much shit. either way, i told her i liked her once and she basically told me to get fucked. i mean like she apologized later and we totally kissed once, but she also was doing it with like three other dudes i fucking guess, so i don't know what it all meant. whatever. you didn't have a lot to be jealous of is what i'm sayin.
Chloe: lmao warren was fuckin crazy about you and it was hella easy to see. he was pretty cool, but i can't say i'm bummed you said no to a date with him. i heard you talking about it when we were breaking into wells' office and ig that was MY turn to be a jealous bitch. but i'm glad he had good taste. i am hot and you should definitely go to a drive in with me.
Chloe: i'm sorry. i wish a lot of shit was different. but i don't know what shit would be like with rachel if none of this had ever happened. maybe if we'd gotten out sooner, but if we'd stayed in arcadia bay, idk. i think we weren't really... meant to be? i guess? there was a lot of fucked up stuff between us, max. i loved her, but i've been thinking lately that maybe just loving someone isn't always enough.
Chloe: shit that got heavy
Chloe: maybe we should go back to nerd puns
Max: I remember you once saying you didn't think anyone was good enough for me but you. I guess that was the first ted talk of yours I came too.
Max: you know labels are overrated. It sucks feeling like you have to put a label on yourself. Maybe I want my label to just be Max Caulfield. I'll allow one label for myself and what I like- Chloe Price. Who needs another? Be honoured you get to be the only person who gets that title.
Max: Your mom didn't.. she just called you and Rachel Hellraisers. But she also called Rachel a good friend and sweet girl. you know, you once told me she was your angel and she saved your life. Even if Rachel wasn't perfect and even if she... acted the way she did I know she loved you.
Max: and if I'd known that maybe I'd have told warren yes to the drive in just to make you more jealous. i would have liked to have some chances at making you jealous. how lucky you are I've only ever belonged to you, Chloe Price
Max: You know Chloe... about what you said... about having a crush on me since we were kids. I just realized what it all meant with the other Chloe. I mean the alternate Chloe... the one who was in the accident. The first thing you, sorry she, wanted was to go walk on the beach. In the sunset. And then she wanted us to watch Blade Runner together. I ended up falling asleep I was so tired from everything. You... sorry she... stayed up though... I woke up in the morning and honestly I'm not even sure she slept.
Max: And... when she asked me to you know... put her to sleep, she wanted her last memories to be with me. I... I almost felt shocked because wouldn't you sorry she want it to be with... William and Joyce? Her mom and dad? But it was so important to her it was with me. That she'd just drift off to sleep dreaming of us together forever.
Max: And now I'm crying all over again because I knew what it meant but now it's.... like I know. I know.
Max: And yeah for crying out cloud maybe we should get back to the nerd puns. I swear to god Chloe Price you better be careful all the time if the universe tries to take you again from me I might end up destroying the whole world
Chloe: chloesexual seems like a totally valid label and honestly they should just add it to the ever growing list of orientations
Chloe: i guess. shit feels so weird after finding out... everything. i still don’t think she deserved anything that happened and ik that i’d forgive her for everything if she was here, but it’s just weird.
Chloe: max caulfield are you saying you’d hook up with a guy just to see me get all green eyed monster on you? i really am lucky you’re blinded by my charms
Chloe: glad to know even alternate, ill bitch me is just as painfully obvious about everything as i am. constants and variables, man.
Chloe: for real tho i’m still so sorry you went through all that, max. i wish you never had to. that was a seriously impossible choice that she— i? — put on you and it’s
Chloe: idk
Chloe: it’s not fair
Chloe: I’ll do my best to not kick the bucket again tho, scouts honor. six times or whatever the fuck it was??? probably enough
Max: I’m going to have so much fun with the ‘other’ section on any website or form I sign for sexuality from now on with Chloesexual in my vocabulary
Max: I know it’s got to be weird. It sucks Rachel… did what she did but she did not deserve anything that happened to her. I hate I couldn’t save Rachel too. I wish we could have had the chance to be a trio all together.
Max: And yes I am saying I’d hook up with a guy to make you into the green-eyed monster. I think you’d look pretty hot jealous. Since I am indeed blinded by your charms for life given my Chloesexual nature maybe somebody else will notice how hot I am soon so I can watch you go jealous girlfriend. I'd love to watch you go off on someone. I'd just sit back and enjoy it. And take a photo to capture you in action.
Max: Yes even in an alternate reality you still loved me. In spite of how much was different there so much was the same too. We were still Max and Chloe.
Max: It’s okay. I got myself into that situation. I tried to save William…. But there are some things you can’t change. Wish you could have seen him too. He was still as goofy as ever, in spite of everything with you… I mean her. And as hard as it was I’m glad I could grant her last wish.
Max: It was a lot of times. Like there was one time when you got impatient because I didn’t give you a target to shoot fast enough and your shot bounced back and hit you in the chest. So I’m probably going to be hella paranoid about you forever even with that scouts honour.
Max: Oh and I have something important to tell you Chloe... about tonight. (innocent emoji)
Chloe: if saving my dad put me in a wheelchair, idk that it’s worth finding out what saving rachel might do to our timeline. sometimes i think if we’d just runaway, shit would’ve been so different, but ig what ifs are what got us into all this shit in the first place...
Chloe: obv you needed to learn a lesson in being more decisive and just picking a target for me. i have 0 regrets. probably bc i’m not shot now lol
Chloe: what about tonight
Max: It’s hard not thinking of the what ifs. I spend a lot of time wondering about what if I hadn’t been in that bathroom…
Max: Oh haha. Well I def didn't take longer than 2 seconds after that. Now I'm more decisive in all my choices like my choice... to let you know...
Max: That your shaka bra will end up on the floor of the mosh pit tonight.
Max: Oh sorry that last message was meant for my other girlfriend.
Max: Just kidding but I hope you felt a flare of jealously (smiling imp emoji)
Max: Oh.. and Chloe I remember you driving to my house...
Max Caulfield - @herpartnerintime
Chloe Price - @tagartist
herpartnerintime...
Max was looking through her photographs. She stopped at the one of Chloe framed by the moonlight she’d taken last night. The moonlight lit up Chloe’s face and blue hair, making her look almost unearthly in beauty.
Guilt suddenly hit Max hard. She was once more overwhelmed by the urge to apologize to Chloe. For ignoring her for five years. She wanted to explain herself. She wanted Chloe to know she had never forgotten her. But how could she explain herself without sounding totally lame and selfish and stupid? She might hurt Chloe more or make her angry if she tried to explain it. Max didn’t think her heart could take any more stabs of pain.
There was nothing she could say that would make up for abandoning Chloe for the five years she had needed her most. She didn’t even feel like Arcadia Bay was enough.
Not for the first time, Max thought of how grateful she was to Rachel for being there for Chloe when she hadn’t been. Max once would have said she didn’t believe in Heaven like Kate did, but after everything, she had to believe it now. She just knew that the doe who had guided her had been Rachel. Chloe will never be alone again Rachel. I promise.
Max suddenly found herself yearning to pick up a photograph and change everything. She could go back in time and refuse to move with her parents and tell her mom and dad she was staying with Chloe, even if that meant moving in with Chloe and her mom. That way Chloe wouldn’t be alone after losing her dad and maybe they could meet Rachel together and everything that had happened wouldn’t happen and…
No Max. You can’t mess around with time like that again.
She reminded herself. She could never fix it. Max was still traumatized over having to put her friend to sleep… forever…. In the alternate timeline she had created. That had been enough for Max to swear off ever going back that far ever again.
She looked up at Chloe, feeling a jolt of electricity run through her as she stared at her friend, thinking about their kiss. Thinking about how she loved Chloe so much she had sacrificed a town for her. How Chloe loved her so much she had promised to be with her forever. Do I really deserve Chloe? I abandoned her for so many years.
The fact that Chloe had welcomed her back into her life when they’d met again after all those years meant the world to Max. Sure, Chloe had rubbed the salt in the wound several times during the first days of being together again but they were deserved. Chloe had still treated her just like her best friend. Chloe could have told me to fuck off the moment she saw me and it I would have deserved it. But she didn’t.
“Hey…Chloe…” Max began. She could feel her face burning hot, thinking about how…. beautiful Chloe looked looking up at her.
She would die for me. And I would die for her. Max thought, thinking of how safe she always felt in Chloe’s presence. Max thought of all the things she had done to keep Chloe safe. She had pulled the trigger of a gun to shoot Frank for Chloe, had stood back as Warren beat up Nathan because all she could feel was burning hot anger that Nathan had once killed Chloe, her Chloe, had drugged Chloe for his sick photos…. Seeing him pull out a gun again had made Max see fire. And of course, the biggest of all of it was Max had chosen Chloe over Arcadia Bay. And she would do it again. She was riddled with guilt over all the lives lost. She might never forgive herself for it. But she would never regret it.
“Chloe…” Max said again, her face burning harder. “I don’t deserve you." The words just burst out of her, tears pooling in her eyes. “After being the worst friend in the world for five years… just because I was selfish and didn’t know how to deal with everything… I kept ignoring you meaning to respond but the guilt got worse and so I just didn’t and then you stopped, you stopped texting and trying to call and Chloe I thought you must hate me,” Max’s voice broke here, she was crying now, but the words were all tumbling out. “I was sure you must hate me and that’s so selfish because I was the one ignoring you. You must have thought I hated you. But all I could think about was how you must hate me now and that’s why I was too scared to even tell you I was back. I couldn’t stand the thought of calling or texting you for you to ignore me, or facing you and seeing you look at me with hate. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. It’s so selfish. I was so selfish.”

Things hadn’t been easy. There had been a lot to digest since the day on the cliff in Arcadia Bay, the feelings of guilt and the underlying emotion of not being worth all the pain and destruction that would come from the storm tearing apart the town. If she had doubted Max’s dedication to her before (which she hadn’t, not after all the rewinds and the hell she’d put herself through just to save her) she certainly couldn’t now. Not with the evidence of how much she cared right in front of her. Even if she couldn’t see herself as worthy of that sort of devotion, the simple act of being chosen as more important had been… overwhelming.
As far as Chloe had been concerned, no one had ever chosen her before. Not her mom when she had to decide between Chloe’s happiness and her future with David, not with Blackwell when they had to choose to be understanding of her concerning behavior or coming down on her harder than ever before after the loss of her dad, not with Rachel when it came between finding her mom and Chloe’s personal safety… She couldn’t even say that it hadn’t had the same feeling with Max and her life in Seattle. But that had been more than made up for in Chloe’s mind; nothing could make her doubt her affection after the week they’d just had.
It’s because of that that she can’t help but look more than a little confused as Max starts to apologize. She’d lifted herself up on her elbows to look at her part way through her words and by the time she’s talking about being the worst friend, about Chloe possibly hating her, she’s sitting up fully, reaching out to try and wipe away Max’s tears as they fall. She shakes her head, wanting to say something, wanting to stop her, but never getting the chance as her words keep coming. Words that twist inside of Chloe’s gut like glass, hating how torn up she’d been, how she could ever think she didn’t deserve her.
“You’re such a fucking idiot…” The words come out with a tender affection, contradicting the way they’d usually land as an insult coming from literally anyone else. Chloe used words like idiot and loser like they were terms of endearment, something that had gotten her into more than a few arguments when people didn’t understand she actually enjoyed their company. She shifts closer to her, going to put one of her arms firmly around Max’s shoulders, leaning into her in an awkwardly positioned side hug as she pulls her close.
“We were just kids, Max,” she says finally, her tone more gentle than it ever was for anyone else. “Kids who got dealt….a shit ton more than we ever should have. I was grieving, and angry, and felt like everything was falling apart around me— how was any thirteen year old supposed to support someone through that from hundreds of miles away?” She frowns a little, her eyes averting to her lap because it’s a little easier to talk when she isn’t looking at people these days. At least about the big emotions. “I stopped texting because I thought you’d found people that were easier to deal with. I figured you hated me and just couldn’t tell me because that’s the kind of person you are. I mean, you aren’t exactly the shining example of chicks who are good with confrontation.” It’s said teasingly rather than critically, but she knows that probably falls a little flat in context with everything else. “I won’t say I wasn’t pissed, that it didn’t hurt, but I get it now. Even back then, I knew if you came back, if you waltzed up and didn’t even acknowledge the fucking silence, I’d still go with it. I’d still run with you. Just like when we were kids. Because it didn’t matter. You’re Max fucking Caulfield. Nothing could change the fact that you’re still my best friend.”
She takes a breath, looking back to her finally, moving so that she could put her hands firmly on both of Max’s shoulders, the way she usually did when she was trying to get her to really listen. “And you absolutely deserve that title. How could you look back at this last week and think in any way that you don’t? You’ve gone… above and fucking beyond what anyone could ever expect from someone they care about. From someone who clearly cares about them in return. You gave up… everything for me, Max. If anything, I don’t deserve you. I’ve been a self involved bitch who’s gotten you into more trouble and danger than any friend should have the right to do to someone. And instead of running away from it, you saved my ass. Over and over and over again. No matter how much it… It hurt you.” Her voice cracks slightly on the last words, hating that Max had had to experience any of the pain she had these last few days. It’s hard to think on, even not knowing all the details first hand. She’s not sure she could handle all the details first hand.
“You don’t have to apologize, Max. You’re … You’re the best friend anyone could ever ask for. I’ll kick the shit out of anyone who ever tries to say differently, and don’t think that doesn’t include you.” It’s not an Emotional Moment with Chloe Price if humor doesn’t get throw in there somewhere, apparently.

“You’re right, I guess I kinda am an idiot,” Max laughed warmly. Feeling Chloe’s touch, her wiping at her tears and then pulling her close was both electric and calming. Grounding. Max hadn’t told Chloe this, but whenever Chloe touched her it was calming to Max, an impossible to deny reminder that Chloe was alive, that she was here with her.
She’d watched Chloe die to many times. She’d been in to many different realities alone, pulled into that terrifying storm all alone over and over, endured the Dark Room alone, knowing Chloe was dead with the fear she might not be able to bring her back haunting her every thought and then every step when she’d escaped. Been alone in Chloe’s bedroom after putting Chloe to sleep… Max could still remember the pain and the feeling of being utterly alone in that room when Chloe’s eyes had closed and her breathing had stopped. At night, when they would lie together in bed, Max always had to be touching Chloe in some way to help her sleep. Whether that was holding hands or lying in each other’s arms or making sure her legs touched Chloe’s… Chloe was her anchor. Her touch made her feel safe. If I can feel Chloe, hear her breathing, it means she’s alive with me, and this is real.
“You’re right. I guess I just… I was keeping that in for so long. I just had to let it out. All this Twilight Zone crap kind of didn’t give me the chance.” She felt like a weight had been lifted, knowing Chloe understood. She’d been thirteen. Chloe’s dad had been like a second dad to her, and she’d been overwhelmed in her grief and Chloe’s grief. To think Chloe had thought all this time she had hated her… Max hated that.
She had to laugh at Chloe pointing out how bad she was at confrontation. “Gosh, if I’d known you’d have ran with me even after everything, maybe I wouldn’t have waited for fate to bring us together," she teased, thinking of the bathroom, where she had first rewinded time to save Chloe. The image of Chloe dead suddenly was all Max could see, dead in the bathroom, dead in the junkyard, dead in her room, and Max felt her heart race and she tensed, but Chloe’s hands on her shoulders pulled her back and calmed her heart and the images vanished and she relaxed.
“I didn’t use to believe in destiny but I think this was all meant to be like this. We were meant to be separated and be brought back together. I mean, the first day I see you after five years, I see you die and I rewind it. How could that be anything but destiny? I just magically see my best friend after five years and I turn back time to save you? I’m just in the bathroom at the perfect time?” There’s no way that wasn’t destiny.
“Okay,” Max said firmly, with a playful grin. “How about from now on, we’re both forbidden from saying or feeling like we don’t deserve each other? New rule for our Pirate Code.” Turning more serious she added, “Maybe being together again put us both in lots of danger but honestly I don’t think I ever felt so alive and just free… It felt like we were really pirates. You had me breaking and entering and enjoying it and wanting to do it again. I was running around with you playing with my powers, trying to solve mysteries. I was standing up to people and giving them hell. You’d have been proud of the crap I said to Mark Jefferson in Dark Room, I told him to eat shit and die and more. Your bravery was rubbing off on me.”
Max realized it was the first time she had brought up the Dark Room since first telling Chloe about it. She didn’t like bringing it up, both from how haunted she still was from it and because she knew how painful it was to hear about for Chloe. She knew Chloe tormented herself for not being there to protect her.
“I’d do it all again, everything. Because you mattered the most to me. And don’t think I'll stand for you ever thinking you weren’t worth everything Chloe Price.” And everyone. “And don’t think I won’t rewind time over and over again to try and convince you if it comes to that.” She laughed, rubbing the last of her tears herself. Chloe could always make her laugh even at the most emotional of times. Look at us, promising to kick and rewind sense into each other if we doubt we deserve each other's devotion.
“And maybe we wouldn’t have… felt the way we do if we’d been together the whole time,” Max added softly, thinking of the kiss, of the flirting, and the energy she felt between them. If she’d never left, they may have just stayed best friends without all this… She felt to shy to say more, her face burning. Chloe had been her first kiss and the first time she had ever felt anything – Max had sometimes wondered if there might be something off about her, given so many people around her were in relationships or going on about how cute some boy was, and Max was there having no idea what it felt like to even have a crush on someone. At most she would think oh they’re cute but nothing more than that - until Chloe came back into her life again and moment after moment had some new part of her awakening.

Chloe nods softly when Max talks about how things had gotten in the way of them getting to really discuss much of anything important. She supposed now they had all the time in the world for it. There’s a part of her that twists up inside knowing that, when others had their own chances cut short so quickly, a guilt that eats away at her whenever she thinks too hard on all the lives that were lost to save her. But feeling Max’s skin warm under her hands, her tears wet on her fingers, and hearing her talk about how the world could’ve been different makes her swallow it down. Guilt could be processed through later. For now, she needed to just cherish what she did have. Her best friend, the girl she cared about more than anyone in the world, in front of her, telling her how much she cared. How being with her was destiny.
It would’ve been nice to run away to Seattle. To get away from the oppressive and stifling waves of grief that came with sitting in her home without her dad, watching her mom struggle to keep the lights on and a roof over their head, and then seeing her get so desperate or lonely or whatever the fuck else that she went for David of all people. Sure, he’d shown some brighter spots, some moments where maybe things could be different, but it hadn’t changed the years of abuse that she’d faced from him, the anger she had pent up. Since leaving Arcadia Bay, she’d seen several texts from David on her phone, gotten a dozen or more voicemails, but the most she’d offered was letting him know she was at least alive and safe. She couldn’t bring herself to try for more. Not yet.
Maybe life would’ve been so much different if she’d been able to stay with Max and her stable family in their stable home in the stable city of Seattle, Washington. Maybe she would have actually given David a chance from afar when she’d had a place so greatly separated from everything that had turned her life to such shit before. Maybe Max never would have ended up in that room with Jefferson. Maybe Rachel never would have ended up in that room with Nathan, either. Maybe everything would have been better, more put together.
She smiles a little sadly, leaning her forehead against Max’s and closing her eyes. “I put my life in danger just fine on my own before you showed up. I think it was me who kept putting you into bad situations rather than the other way around.” She swallows roughly after she says those words, realizing how true they are. She’s pretty sure Max’s life would’ve been a lot less intense if she hadn’t shoved herself back into it. “I’m… glad it made you feel braver. That you feel stronger from all of it. Between that and how much happier I felt just having you there with me, having those moments where we could just have fun, it feels like maybe… Maybe the bullshit of it all was worth it.”
She feels her eyes burning, trying harder to fight back the emotions and the tears that want to spill out. I’d do it all again. There’s a clench in her gut, one that makes her hands squeeze Max’s tightly when she mentions being willing to rewind over and over for her. Seeing how badly it had hurt her, how much shit it had put the universe through, makes it hard to not have a kneejerk fear to the idea of Max using her powers again over her. She knows it’s stupid, that Max would never be so careless again (or at least, she hoped), but it’s probably still too soon for her to separate it all. “I think you’ve done more than enough to show you think I matter most,” she finally mutters, her voice uncharacteristically quiet. It’s still hard to imagine herself being worth an entire town, being worth the life of her mother, of Warren, of people as good as Kate Marsh, but she’s trying. She’s trying so hard, because she never wants Max to feel like she made the wrong choice.
“Felt… what way that we do?” She lifts her head from Max’s, pulling back enough to look at her. She knows full well how they feel, but it’s hard to not want to talk about it, to say more. Was this why Rachel had made her clarify when she’d called them this instead of just saying they were more than friends? She thinks she can get it a little more now, that desire for clarity, no matter how hard or embarrassing it was to own up to.

Max and Chloe’s foreheads were touching now, they were holding each other’s hands. Max couldn’t believe she had lived life for five years without Chloe - because now she couldn’t imagine going a single day without Chloe by her side. There’s no way I would have survived sacrificing Chloe… I’d have been broken and empty.
“I suppose given how the first time I see you in five years, you’re talking to this unhinged guy in the bathroom about having hella cash that yeah, you were putting your life in danger before I showed up,” Max allowed. “But you didn’t force me to join you in trying to find Rachel, or force me to join you in all the crazy. I wanted to help you. I wanted to be involved. I hadn’t been so happy or had so much fun in years with someone, and I’ve never been so brave or strong and it’s all because of you. All the bullshit was totally worth it.”
Max paused then added softly, “You know, before we reunited in your car, I was noticing Rachel’s posters everywhere and talking to everyone about her. Her posters made me so sad. I wanted to know what happened. And finding out you loved her made me more determined than ever. Hearing you and everyone talk about her, I almost felt like I knew her.” Max hesitated now. She’d never told Chloe this.
“I don’t know if… if a doe… if does were ever… a symbol of hers, I know I've always been drawn to their image but Chloe… there was this doe… She… was like a ghost. She guided me sometimes. In the storm… in… these nightmares… I saw her once in the junkyard and took a photo but she wasn’t in it… I think it was her. I think she wanted me to help you. Help you find her, so you'd know she didn't abandon you, help me save you… And even protect me.” Max said, thinking of how the doe had guided her in the storm when she had been so terrified and afraid.
Maybe knowing this will give her some peace.
The feeling of Chloe’s hands squeezing hers tighter made Max’s heart jolt and she squeezed them back. Their hands were both burning hot now.
“I’m glad knowing… you won’t ever feel alone again. Or abandoned,” Max said, matching Chloe’s quiet tone. “I’ll always be with you,” she echoed the words Chloe had said to her, after she had made her choice and torn up the picture.
Max knew, even though Chloe asked, that Chloe knew the way they felt. But she wanted to hear it. And Max wanted to say it. She needed to put words to it. She wanted to put words to it. And she wanted to hear the words back. She looked into Chloe’s blue eyes. Squeezed Chloe’s hands tighter. “We’re in love,” she just said it, like a fact, because it was a fact.
“Before you, I had no idea what being in love felt like. I didn’t know if I ever would. I was always to busy looking at the world through my camera. Then we meet again, by destiny or fate, and I’m feeling all sorts of things I’ve never felt before. That I didn’t know I could feel. Or maybe I'd forgotten, because I think I felt it sometimes as a kid. Little thunder shocks and thunderbolts sometimes to my heart. Only now it was all the time, those shocks and bolts and it didn’t stop. It was like the bolts built up to like a Thunder. It just kept getting more and more intense. I’d be at Blackwell struggling to focus because all I could think about was you. I’d be in my dorm room thinking about you. I always was. I remember when you texted me when I was in class saying marry me and we should elope and my heart leapt and I felt so giddy. Every time you flirted with me I felt so dizzy and excited... because you were flirting and I was flirting back... And I couldn't stop thinking about you and I was starting to realize I don’t think it’s normal to think so obsessively about your best friend,” she had to laugh.
“I remember at the pool I couldn’t take my eyes off you. I didn’t want to leave that pool. When we laid in bed together in your room that night I could feel my heart pounding. And when I woke up next to you in the morning my heart started pounding again. I didn’t want to leave that bed,” Max reached out and touched Chloe’s cheek. “I wanted to freeze time and stay like that forever with you.”
Max stopped for a moment to catch her breath. She had really just spilled out so much there, like a torrent. “And then you dared me to kiss you, and after lying in bed with you with my heart pounding I felt like my heart was going to explode and I went for it, and it was all could think about. And then all I could think about was how I wanted to kiss you again. All the time. Because I love you, Chloe Price. I love you so much I had to choose you. Because I knew I couldn't live without you. Because I want you by my side. Forever.”
Max leaned in closer to Chloe, talking about the kiss and talking about how she’d wanted to kiss her again was all making Max’s body burn with the desire to close this last gap between them and kiss. Her heart was pounding in her ears. She moved even closer, her lips about to touch Chloe’s, but right before Max’s lips touched Chloe’s, she pulled herself away from Chloe.
It was torturous to pull away when all Max wanted to do was kiss Chloe. She was actually shaking now, trembling with the need to kiss Chloe. Pulling away like that when she’d been so close to kissing her once again was actually painful. She was stopping herself from something she wanted so badly. She found herself holding onto Chloe’s hands even tighter, because stopping herself from kissing her and keeping herself from kissing her was that overwhelming. She was literally at war with herself, it was taking everything she had not to kiss Chloe. Her body felt like it was on fire and she couldn’t take it. She wanted to kiss Chloe, she wanted her, she had told Chloe how she loved her with words and now she wanted to go beyond that and show Chloe how much she loved her this way too. It was taking everything she had to keep herself still.
Because sometimes, when the universe gave you the perfect moment, you had to be patient. You had to wait and take the perfect shot. And for this shot, she didn’t need her camera.
“Chloe Price… I dare you to kiss me,” Max breathed, “I double dare you. Kiss me now.”
As soon as Max flings herself out of the bathroom and into her arms, Chloe's wrapping her own arms around her, hugging her tightly, keeping one hand in her hair and gently stroking it to try and bring her some kind of comfort. She feels someone push passed them to get into the bathroom, hears them muttering under their breath, and she's sure to give them a solid glare over Max's shoulder as she sees the door slam behind them. Unempathetic bastards.
Chloe carefully goes to guide Max away from the door, making sure to give Max's phone a gentle kick away from the bathroom so it doesn't get lost. She'll bend down and get it when she's done holding her, which she's sure won't be for quite a while more given the shaking and the way Max's voice sounds in her ear. "It's alright, Max Fury," she mutters, making sure to give the nickname in a gentle tone that will hopefully keep her more grounded. "No one is going to take me from you again. I promise." She doubts any of these strangers in the mall will care about either of them now that they're able to freely pee without having to bang on the door.
She shushes her, going to help guide her onto the floor by the wall, glad that the department store is mostly empty and the traffic is slow, or she would have had to suggest going elsewhere. Walking is probably better for when Max isn't trembling, she thinks. No one walks well on shaky legs.
"I know how fucked up it must have all felt, how real, but you're okay, Max. No one was trying to hurt you. We're just in some lame ass shopping mall in Seattle. No one's got you tied up and no one's going to. I mean, y'know, so long as you don't go taking candy from strangers anyway."
herpartnerintime:
Max never wanted to leave Chloe’s arms. The last times she’d flung herself into Chloe’s arms like this she’d had to let go way to soon. She felt so safe with Chloe holding her like this, hugging her tight, one of Chloe’s hands stroking her hair, it felt so soothing, calming. She felt her trembles slowing down, she felt safe and shielded in Chloe’s arms.
She knows nothing can hurt her now with Chloe holding her like this. She knows Chloe would do anything to protect her. She would kill for her, she knows that, she’s seen her do it, she killed Frank for her, even though Chloe doesn't remember or even know, because Max rewinded it and never spoke of it. In Chloe’s arms like this, she’s safer than she’s ever been, anyone who wanted to hurt her would face Chloe’s fiery protective fury.
Feeling Chloe guide her onto the floor by the wall, hearing Chloe’s voice, calling her one of Chloe’s many nicknames for her, Max Fury, telling her it’s alright and no one was going to take her from her again, that she promised, it’s all calming to Max, Chloe is real, she’s with her, she’s not in the Dark Room… Chloe won’t let her go back to the Dark Room.
She’s so close to totally calming down, but now that Max feels safe she’s letting herself focus on Chloe and how Chloe could be in danger now. She’s doesn’t hear everything Chloe is saying anymore, like the volume on her voice has been lowered. The world is still a strange mix of white and red with large black holes, some of them growing larger and larger. She’s messed with time so much she has no idea how to tell if she’s just losing it or if she’s in threat of being dropped back into that reality where Chloe was dead and gone. Max still remembers the emptiness of a world where Chloe was dead and no longer existing. Still remembers how all she had left of Chloe was her bullet necklace, still remembers knowing that at one point, Chloe was dead and buried somewhere, leaving Max utterly alone.
And memories of that emptiness bring back the fear. Pull the calm away and bring the panic back. It’s not over.
“You don’t understand Chloe,” Max protests. She feels like she’s back on the cliff again, trying to convince Chloe she’s not crazy. “Everything looks…. Everything looks like it did when I was back in time in a photograph. All white with red and black holes forming. I don’t know… I don’t know if it’s real, I could end up back in that reality where you’re dead Chloe…I can't lose you again. I can't.” She’s suddenly thinking about how she always wakes up with Chloe’s arms wrapped around her. Thinks about how their bare skin is touching, how that feels, how it feels to wake up in the morning with Chloe when in the night they had made love and fallen asleep together…
And she’s imagining waking up alone, no Chloe to ever hold her again.
And that’s when she sees them. Nathan first. Then Jefferson. From the red and black holes she sees Nathan and Jefferson, each holding guns, pointing them at Chloe, nobody would even miss your punk ass would they? Nathan’s saying. Chloe, right. Yeah, I'm sorry I killed—that Nathan killed her in self-defense, says Jefferson. Terror and fear seizes Max, drowns her.
“Chloe, it’s Nathan and Jefferson, they’re going to shoot you! They're going to kill you!” She cries out in warning, her voice full of fear, fear of losing Chloe. She can see their fingers are pressing down on the triggers…
Without even thinking she moves her hands from Chloe’s back to grasp Chloe’s hands and hold on as tightly as she can as she pushes down with her power.
Her head pounds, throbs, she cries out, she’s squeezing Chloe’s hands, time freezes, only she and Chloe are moving but the pain is so much, it hurts, she’s crying out, she loses her hold and time starts up again and Nathan and Jefferson’s guns are still pointing at Chloe and Max pushes down again, freezing time, locking time in place, her and Chloe, the only ones who are moving. Nathan and Jefferson are frozen, the bullets from their guns heading for Chloe frozen. She’s frozen everyone, everything. The world is shimmering and flickering red, like it did when she froze time to save Kate.
“You’re safe Chloe, we’re safe, we just have to get to your truck…” Max moans out. Still clinging to Chloe's hands she tries to stand, but she's so weak she can barely do it. She feels wetness on her lip. Her nose is bleeding. She can tell it’s a lot more blood than usual, that it’s flowing freely. She feels so dizzy. She’s only frozen time once. She's never frozen it with another person in the time freeze. The pain in her head is so bad she's scared, she feels like she might die from the pain of it, but she has to hold time in place. Nathan and Jefferson are going to shoot Chloe if she doesn’t…
And Max can't go back to a world where Chloe is dead. She refuses. She’ll keep Chloe safe.
No matter what. Even if it kills her. Chloe is all that matters...
