Maxie has two forms of non-verbal communication. The first one he shares with everyone -- body language. But then there’s also his tail language, which can tell a very different story, although to those who don’t know him too well, it can be insignificant. To those who do know him well, however, his tail language speaks the largest truth. Here’s a brief summary of some of that tail language.
Tail resting normally, moving in tandem with his movements and possibly the odd swish: Relaxed and somewhat content.
Tail drooping, dragging along the floor and only moving whenever Maxie himself moves: Sadness and depression. Can also be an indicator of physiological problems such as an episode of bodily weakness (his tail shows it first), tiredness, starvation, overheating or dehydration.
Tail raised, twitching whenever he moves or swishing languidly: Arousal and/or contentment. The swishes and twitches can differentiate further between whether he’s aroused or content.
Tail tense, twitching briefly: Fear or anger. However, when angry, his tail tends to swish more than twitch, and swishes rather violently at times.
Tail practically tucked between his legs and quivering: Extreme fear. Sometimes his tail will even curl around himself.
