Flag of Mongolia
Aspect Ratio 1:2
The current flag of Mongolia was adopted in 1992. The design is rooted in the 1911 flag of the Bogd Khaanate, the Mongolian government that broke from China under Qing rule. All of the Bogd Khaanate's flag featured some form of the Soyombo symbol, a unique character from the Soyombo alphabet which serves as the emblem of Mongolia. Within the symbol are abstract geometric representations of fire, sun, moon, earth, water, and the tajitu or yin-yang symbol. The subsequent government of Mongolia, the Soviet linked Mongolian People's Republic continued to use many of the same design elements throughout it's existence, including the Soyombo symbol. After the fall of People's Republic, closely linked to the fall of the USSR itself, the new government updated the flag to remove socialist elements. The colors were slightly updated as well. The central blue symbolizes the eternal blue sky, while the red bands represent the ability of Mongolians to thrive in the nation's harsh environment.
