EP Review: ViLLΛGE ‘Takeover’
It’s quite hard to source background information on ViLLΛGE, little that I can find being that behind the alias is a young man from Romania, who’s continuing production of future garage/house beats has rocked the electronic dance music scene. Most recently releasing his second EP The Catch on Origami Sound alongside another of their favoured artists Arapaima, his following is continuing to grow, with over 16,000 likes on his SoundCloud page. Here I’ve looked at Takeover, his first EP release with Origami Sound that came out in November 2012. I first came across ViLLΛGE from browsing through YouTube videos back in early 2012, and hearing his track Wanna Tell You made me hungry for more. Luckily I didn’t have to wait long for him to release his Takeover EP, and I feel this is a compilation any electro/house music worshipper should listen to.
On Origami’s website they list ViLLΛGE as previously being their “go-to guy for anything from video trailers to VJing during our club nights.” According to them, the young producer “couldn't avoid making some music of his own”, leading to the production of Takeover. Described as “a testament of his seemingly infinite potential and fantastic sense of quality and appeal”, Takeover is bursting with unique sounds that bridge the gap between a variety of genres. Here I’ve looked at the EP track by track, giving a detailed review about what to expect from each song. 1. Dive 04:34 The EP starts with Dive, which begins with a mysterious intro solely filled with elongated piano tones. Developing with a kick and echoing vocals, the track continues with a catchy click, which captures the listeners’ attention. The lyrics develop with repetitive and ever more echoing vocals, “going deeper ain’t gone kill k-kill me”. The track is intensified with a reverberating bass line and progressive drum sequence, finishing off with some brilliantly intensified synth patterns. Sitting at around 140bpm, this one wouldn’t be most at home being played out to a crowd, but definitely gets the listener nodding their head along to the beat and excited to listen to the rest of the EP. 2. Lift You Up 04:12 Lift You Up has more of a dubstep feel, with deep bass lines and a more prominent synth pattern. Filled at first with a background of drums and percussion sounds, the track intensifies as these are dropped, giving more focus to the repeating, snatched and often unidentifiable lyrics. It’s also quite catchy, and as one of the shortest songs on the EP it fits a lot of shifting patterns into a song that is only just over four minutes long. 3. Wanna Tell You 05:13 Starting immediately with a catchy kick backed with bass, the track develops with high-pitched, repetitive vocals “yeah, yeah” which progresses into the main lyrics that provide the reason behind the track title, “things I wanna tell you”. The vocals make way for higher frequency patterns as the song develops, creating an interesting sound that holds the listeners attention. The beat makes it impossible not to nod your head along to it, and the overall pace of the track makes it one that could easily be played in a club to get the crowd dancing. 4. Nothing Between Us 05:29 Nothing Between Us is filled with a mix of catchy kicks and heavy bass lines added with sweeping sound patterns and progressive chords. It develops with an exaggerated wobbling bass note that gives way to high-pitched, snatched lyrics, “nothing between us” followed by a lower pitched male vocal note. Around halfway through the track takes a turn by putting more focus on the reverberating bass lines. Complete with pumping kicks and slower claps, the track is intensified with the addition of a slower background bass note and increasingly echoing vocals. Although the track is the longest on the EP, the variety of sounds and sequences used throughout makes it seem shorter, as well as making the listener want to go back and hear it again. 5. Memories Of You 04:09 Starting with a low synth pattern, the song develops with slightly delayed lyrics, repeating “memories of you”. The addition of a kick and increasingly fast-paced clap pattern gives the track a lively rhythm and sets it apart from the rest. The background synth patterns intensify the mood of the track, along with creating an intense build up to each drop throughout. 6. Takeover 05:11 Takeover is one of the fastest tracks on the EP sitting at 150bpm. ViLLΛGE wastes no time getting straight into this one, with loud and echoing synth patterns that quickly develop with the addition of a heavy bass kick. The incorporation of snatched vocal patterns add something different to the track, and as these develop and become increasingly repetitive they actually create a catchy beat instead of one that could have easily become irritating. The track winds down slowly at the end with the removal of the heavy bass line, slowly fazing out the sounds before coming to an abrupt stop. Follow this link to purchase ViLLΛGE’s ‘Takeover’ EP.
