HASHTAGS IN RECENT NEWS
1. Bare them all!
#WithoutShoes
TOMS is known for giving away a pair of shoes to a child in need for every purchase. To celebrate their birthday, they’re doing the same thing except you don’t have to buy anything!
Take an Instagram photo of your bare feet, tag it with #WithoutShoes, and TOMS will give away one pair to a child! (This ends on May 21, 2015.)
2. Can you own a hashtag?
#TakingBackTheStreets
A partnership between a bottled water company and street artists is turning sour after the company is claiming ownership over this hashtag, saying that it has trademarked it.
While street artists in New York have always been using it to promote their work on Instagram, the company has only started using it recently for a health awareness campaign.
The drink company has been reported to have sent at least one cease-and-desist letter to a community group.
3. When selfies can save lives
#BeaniesForBrainCancer
During a local television awards ceremony, Carrie Bickmore, a news presenter from Australia, encouraged the audience and the show’s viewers to help raise awareness for brain cancer by posting their selfies wearing beanies.
The hashtag is also helping raise awareness about how much is still needed to fund research for brain cancer.
4. If only memes can win elections!
#JeSuisEd
It’s not just on Twitter. Even on Instagram, supporters of Ed Miliban are trying to show that no one can really eat a bacon sandwich without looking messy.
This has been happening since the former British Labour Party leader was photographed awkwardly eating a bacon sandwich, making the image an Internet meme.
Sadly, the movement on social media couldn’t get the Labour Party the majority of seats in the 2015 General Elections.
5. A historical hashtag for UK
#GE2015
A new parliament is elected in the United Kingdom every five years. On May 8, the Conservatives were declared the winner, an outcome that couldn’t be clearly predicted by opinion polls. How are Instagram users reacting to the results?
6. #MayThe4thBeWithYou, says Star Wars fans
As they do every year, Star Wars fans go crazy with this hashtag!
Now check this awesome coffee painting of Yoda...
7. Turning day-to-day selfies into a movement
#Blackout #BlackSelfieDay
The black community on social media is using these hashtags on selfies as a way to celebrate the beauty of being black.
Even though some are criticizing the movement to be exclusionary, the hashtags are undoubtedly becoming a tool to strengthen the community and continue conversations about the black identity.
The creators of the movement are now raising funds to make Blackout a brand name.
