A short (10k) that I wrote for Talder / Motherland Fort Salem. I’ve been binging Talder fics for months and hadn’t written anything for them in a long while so it was time.
when I tell y’all that chapter 4 is nearly 8,000 words of emotional introspection combined with philosophical conversations, “magic-induced” touching, flirting and a dash of humor, I am still probably leaving something out
Chapter 4 Talder lost memories fic coming at you tomorrow (Monday) night, folks
If only I could finish the epilogue on my other fic!
Anyway! Here's the fic:

Head canon continuation of season 2 episode 6 in Tallys POV
Came up with this before Halley's comet went by. Meant to get it before then. Whoops.
Halley’s comet will be visible tonight and General Sarah Alder couldn’t care less. Alder had seen an article about it earlier in the week, but even if she’d missed it, people are talking about it all over the base. Thankfully, all that’s being discussed are the comet itself or places to watch it pass. That hasn’t always been the case.
Witches have always been connected to nature, but comet is a cosmic piece of ice and rock. That’s outside of witch capabilities, but that hasn’t stopped both civilians and witches from wanting her to do something about it whenever it appeared in the past. Halley’s Comet had been seen as a bad omen for longer than she’s been alive. A sign of war, death, and a harbinger of doom. There’s no truth to any of it, but this is only the second time it’s passed and not given her a headache. She’s enjoying the peace.
The comet isn’t what’s given her the biggest headache though. That honor belongs to volcanos. Two specific eruptions had her attending seemingly endless meetings with both civilians and witches alike. The first occurred in 1815 when Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted, causing the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. It blew the mountain apart and caused tsunamis that killed at least ten thousand, but that was only the immediate effects in the surrounding islands. Nearly a hundred thousand died as a result of the disease and famine that followed when crops wouldn’t grow.
Things were only beginning to die down for her when another Indonesian volcano had a series of eruptions in Krakatoa in 1883. Seventy percent of the island was destroyed and twenty million tons of sulphur were released as well as tsunamis. The effects of both were felt all the way in North America when they led to what was called volcanic winter. The blast could be heard three thousand miles away.
Civilians blamed witch kind or her directly for both eruptions and witches demanded to know why there hadn’t been preventative measures in place. Trying to explain that attempting to monitor all potential natural disasters was nearly impossible and that there was little witches could do against one of the most powerful explosions in recorded history.
That’s not to say there haven’t been events that were triggered by witches. She remembers being sent to Africa with a unit when quelea birds, often referred to as locusts with wings due to how they traveled in groups of millions and ate entire harvests, were being used to target small grain crops in specific areas. Tracking down who was responsible had been more complicated than necessary, but that tended to be the case when dealing with matters in other countries, even when their assistance was requested.
Just the memory of the events have her getting frustrated and walking along campus to clear her head, but all irritation vanishes when Tally Craven approaches her with excitement in her deep brown eyes and dimples on fully display to ask if she wanted to watch the comet go by with her. The cadet’s nerves then catch up with her and she starts rambling about not knowing where they could go and that it’s something she’s probably seen before. Alder cuts her off and gives her a chance to take a deep breath before replying.
“I’d love to and know just the spot.”
The way the Knower beams at her, she already knows she’ll enjoy herself.
Motherland Fort Salem, Talder. Tally gets pregnant and Sarah dies (I think) when she resurrects tally is pregnant and living with her mother and Sarah stays to help not realising the child is hers.
