Kristoff sometimes hated being a regent. It was hard to look after a country.
And look after his two best friends' five year-old son whose ice powers were becoming stronger.
Right now he was on his way down to the town square, where he had received a message that Niklas, who went on an outing by himself, had gotten into some trouble.
When he arrived at the scene, he suddenly realized why.
Several older looking boys were being pulled out of a gigantic snowdrift, while the little prince stood next to a guard, looking very sheepish.
"Oh, boy," he muttered, walking up to the guard. "Want to tell me what happened here?"
The guard looked over at him. "Oh, Lord Kristoff. Well, the report is varied, sir."
The blonde man raised an eyebrow. "Varied?"
"Yes, sir. Some are saying he attacked the boys, the boys attacked him, so we're not exactly sure what is what."
Kristoff nodded. "I see." Then he knelt down in front of his nephew. "Niklas? Do you want to tell me what happened?"
The boy looked up, the beginnings of tears shining in his blue eyes. "They--they were...they were saying things."
"Things about what?"
He sniffled and wiped his nose with his sleeve. "Things about Momma and Mommy."
Kristoff felt a bolt of rage. Damn it.
There were a few people in Arendelle who had not wholly accepted the two queens' marriage and relationship; many detractors were nobles who had nothing really to do than gossip and smear their names. And it really made him mad.
Apparently, Niklas felt the same way.
He looked up at the guard. "Were they antagonizing him?"
The guard, Roland, nodded grimly. "Yes, sir."
"Hmm." Kristoff then stood up and looked over at said boys, who were now running away. "Parents weren't nearby, I take it."
"No, sir."
"Ah." With that, he bent down and picked up his nephew. "Come on, little one. Let's go home."
As they started to head back to the castle, with Roland walking behind them, Niklas looked up at him with those big blue eyes. "Am I gonna be in trouble, Uncle Kristoff?"
The former mountaineer looked back to him. "Well, didn't your mothers tell you that you needed to choose when to use your powers?"
"...uh-huh." The prince said in a tiny voice.
"And that wasn't really a good time, was it?"
"...no, but they were saying mean things, Uncle Kristoff! I told 'em to stop but they didn't!"
"And I think that's good you told them to. But then you shouldn't have thrown them into the snow." His heart pinging at the way Niklas looked sad, he said "If it were up to me, we'd go back and teach them a lesson. However, it's the mark of a good person to just say something, and then just walk away."
The prince sighed and burrowed his face into his uncle's broad chest. "...'Kay."
Kristoff couldn't help but smile. "Come on. Remember that they're coming back from Corona tomorrow."
----
The next morning, Niklas was in a mix of excitement that his Mama and Mommy were coming back, and nervousness that they would be mad he used his powers to hurt someone. It was so much so that he couldn't eat his breakfast.
Gertrude pushed his plate of bacon and eggs closer to him. "Come now, young man, you need to eat."
The prince looked down at his food. "I--I'm not really hungry, Granny."
The old woman looked at him sternly. "Now Niklas, what will your mothers say if they see that you didn't eat your breakfast, hmm?"
"Um..." He drummed his fingers on the table. "They'll be...upset."
"Exactly." She watched as he picked up his fork and started to eat. Ah, he reminded her so much of Their Majesties as children. Honestly, she couldn't blame him for defending his parents; she felt the same way when she heard such slander against the girls--and after all that happened, they deserved to have some happiness.
He finished his meal and pushed his plate away. "Granny Gertrude?"
"Yes, dear?"
He thought for a moment, and then asked "Why do people say mean things about Momma and Mommy? What did they do to them to make them say mean things?"
Oh, dear. How should she explain this? The old woman sighed, and then sat down next to him. "Well, Niklas, there are some people who don't like the fact that your mothers are married to each other; those people believe that the only type of marriage should be between a man and woman."
"Like Uncle Kristoff and Aunt Emma?"
"Yes, like Uncle Kristoff and Aunt Emma. And those people believe a girl and a girl shouldn't get married because one of them is the same as the other."
"Oh." Niklas looked down at his hands, as if expecting an answer to come shooting from his fingertips like ice. "Do you think one day people will be able to marry who they want?"
Gertrude was surprised at what he said. She opened her mouth to say something when the trumpets sounded. The herald then called out:
"Their Majesties have returned! Queen Elsa and Queen Anna have returned! Open the gates!"
Gertrude jumped up from her seat. "They're back!"
Niklas was already up and halfway to the door. "C'mon, Granny!"
-----
With a grin, Kristoff hugged Anna and pulled away from her. "So how was Corona?"
The red-haired woman smiled and said "Wonderful! Eugene and Rapunzel say hello."
"And that next time we should bring Niklas with us. " Elsa said, walking up to him and giving him a hug as well. "Speaking of which, did he behave himself while we were gone?"
The blonde man chewed his bottom lip. "Uh...well, he, uh---"
"Momma! Mommy!"
All three turned to see the young blonde-haired prince come racing out of the castle. As he almost made it, he stopped short, nearly tripping, and walked the rest of the way. He then dipped a bow at the waist.
'Well, what do you know? He remembered to bow.' Kristoff thought as both Niklas' parent curtsied back to him.
Then the prince ran forward and jumped into Anna's open arms. "Mommy, I missed you guys a whole lot!"
Anna smiled and hugged him tightly. "And we missed you, too, little one."
Elsa went next to them and hugged him from the other side. "Next time you should come with us."
He giggled as both his mothers kissed him on both cheeks. "Okay! I like Queen 'punzel and King Eugene."
They began to walk back to the castle, Kristoff following behind them. Niklas went into full chatter mode, telling them everything that happened since they left.
-----
"He did WHAT?!"
Ooh, Momma sounded mad. Niklas could tell from where he listened with his ear against the door--that, and the sudden flash of ice from under it.
"He used his powers to throw a couple of boys into a snowdrift he made himself." Uncle Kristoff answered, sounding tired.
"But why?" Came Mommy's voice.
"Well...uh..."
"Kristoff, you do a fantastic interpretation of a over-nauseous Sven, but tell us why our son attacked those boys or I swear I will freeze you so fast your head will spin." Uh-oh. Momma was definitely mad.
He heard his uncle sigh. "Apparently they were saying sh--I mean stuff about you two and, y-y-you know, the whole marriage thing."
Niklas heard a growl and then Momma exploded. "Goddamn it sons of bitches that have nothing better to do than be complete and utter assholes!"
Wow. Those were a lot of weird words that he'd never heard before, and he hoped he would never hear them again.
"Elsa, calm down." Okay, Mommy could probably calm her down; she usually did.
"But why after all this time do they still hate us?"
"I don't know. We'll get through it."
Niklas sighed, and then clapped a hand to his mouth. Oops.
The door opened sending him backward, and Kristoff looked own at his nephew who now lay sprawled on the floor.
"Niklas, shouldn't you be in bed?"
He got up from the floor. "Actually, I--I wanted to to talk to Momma an' Mommy." He looked around his uncle's legs to see Elsa and Anna sitting on their bed.
Anna straightened up and motioned for him to come sit between her and Elsa. He did, walking across the floor and scrambling onto the bed, positioning himself in-between them. He never really admitted it to anyone, but he liked sitting on their bed.
He looked over at his uncle. "Uncle Kristoff, can you leave us alone. please?"
The former ice harvester couldn't help but smile a little. "As my prince wishes. Good night, you three." With that, he stepped outside and closed the door.
Niklas looked up at his Momma and Mommy, feeling nervous. "Momma, Mommy, I...I'm sorry for for usin' my powers when I wasn't s'posed to."
Elsa breathed in and out, and then put her hand on her son's shoulder. "Sweetheart, you were just doing what you thought was right."
"Yeah, I know, but they were saying mean stuff about you and Mommy, and it was really really mean."
Anna sat down on the other side of him. "Niklas, there will always be people who say mean things; sometimes the best thing to do is just say you're wrong, and then walk away."
The young prince couldn't help but grin. "Uncle Kristoff said something like that."
"Well, your uncle knows what he's talking about."
He giggled, and then became serious again. When he spoke next, it was with a serious tone. "When I'm king, I'll be able to make all kinds of laws, right?"
Anna looked over at her wife over his head. "Uh, yes, honey."
"Then when I'm king, I'll make a law that everyone in Arendelle can marry whoever they love."
Both women were thunderstruck. And then Elsa said with a trace of tears in her voice "I think that'll be wonderful, Niklas."
He smiled broadly. "Hey, can I stay in here with you?"
