Q & A with Chicago's Own Talk To You Never!
Fangirl Rhythm recently had the opportunity to have a Q & A with Chicago's own Talk To You Never at their music video release show on August 14, 2016.
When did you become a band? What made you guys decide to become a band together?
Mike: Well, we became a band almost 3 years ago (on December 23rd 2013), which is why our shirts have the number 13 on the back. Um.. I always wanted to be in a pop-punk band, that's always been something I really wanted to do.
Gonzalo: What pretty much happened is that I bought a bass and I remembered that Mike played guitar and I was like Mike let's start a band and he was like "Yeah, I'm down". Then I remembered Kendall played guitar.
Kendall: We ran into each other at Morton College and Gonzalo randomly asked me if I wanted to be in a band and I said "Yeah, I'm down".
Gonzalo: That's how us three got started.
How did you guys come up with your band name?
Mike: It's funny.. The first song we ever worked on together was called "TTYN" and we didn't have a band name.
Gonzalo: The same song that the music video we just released is based on.
Mike: Our first drummer Jimmy was the one who said what is that song called? Why don't we name the band that?
What influenced you guys to become musicians?
Mike: My grandma was the person that really influenced me, she played organ at her church and my mom because she helped me get lessons and helped me learn everything.
Gonzalo: I got into music because growing up I had cousins and family members who were musically talented and they were in different Spanish groups all their life. So, I always wanted to play on stage in front of a ton of people just like them and when I was 18 I finally saved enough money to buy myself a bass and that's what started me off pretty much.
Kendall: I went to my first summer concert, and watching them play up there triggered something in me. So, I bought my first guitar my freshman year of high school and here I am now.
RJ: In fifth grade, I tried out for concert band. I sucked really bad and ended up playing trombone and in high school my friends talked me into joining a band and I've played guitar ever since.
Alex: Really just music, I've just always loved music. My cousin also played drums and she got me really into it. I would go over to her house and she gave me her drum set and I started to pick it up.
What was your inspiration for your EP, "Don't Mind Me"?
Mike: A lot of my history with girlfriends and dealing with a lot of stuff I didn't want to deal with in high school and college,
What is your favorite song off of your EP, "Don't Mind Me"?
Mike: Atelophobia because of the energy, the words, and everything. It was one of the hardest songs I've ever written because it's the most honest song I've ever written.
Gonzalo: Elizabeth (It Never Would Have Worked Out Between Us)
Kendall: Atelophobia because it's energetic and it pumps me up.
RJ: I kinda hate to say it but my favorite song is "Elizabeth (It Never Would Have Worked Out Between Us).” I don't like playing it at all, but I like listening to it the best.
Alex: Harem Ave. because it's the first song I learned when I tried out for the band and it's the fastest song I'd say.
Gonzalo: That's actually the song that lead me to decide that we wanted him to join the band because "TTYN" is a very difficult song to play and he played it so well the first time.
What inspired your recently released EP, "What Are You Waiting For"?
Gonzalo: We needed new music. We were playing a lot of shows but we weren't releasing anything new. It's a good thing that RJ came in because he added a new influence to the new EP.
Mike: We were slowly becoming irrelevant in the scene and we were like okay it's time to bust something out. RJ coming in was great because I was always writing the music so it was starting to all sound the same and I needed something from the outside to help me out with this and we found RJ and he's great with writing on the guitar. The one thing that we learned is that you can grow as a band but you don't have to change your sound.
What is your favorite song off of your recently released EP, "What Are You Waiting For"?
Mike: I can't pick one. They're like my babies, I wrote them all. But if I had to pick one right now it would be, "Know What They Say About Women and Trolley Cars (There's Plenty Of'em In The Sea)" because it's fun to play and because I've always wanted to write a fast pop-punk song and I was finally able to do that.
Gonzalo: "Stagnant" because for me it's the most emotional song.
Kendall: "Know What They Say About Women and Trolley Cars (There's Plenty Of'em In The Sea)".
RJ: "...The One About The Girl From London" because of the Friends reference and because it was the first song I wrote with Mike.
Alex: "Know What They Say About Women and Trolley Cars (There's Plenty Of'em In The Sea)" because it was one of the first songs I wrote from scratch with them because some of the other songs I just did the drums.
If you could change anything about either EP, would you? If so, what would it be and why?
Gonzalo: The quality of the first EP. We're not saying it's a bad EP, what we're saying is that you can see how much we've grown since the first EP.
Mike: I’m kind of happier that it ended up the way that it did because it's just brought us closer as a band.
RJ: I would've played lead guitar on the first EP.
Alex: I would've recorded the drums on the first EP.
How has your music evolved since you first begin playing music together?
Mike: RJ has been helping me write a lot of the music now.
Gonzalo: Our energy has doubled. RJ came in as our lead guitarist and he's kind of introduced us to a whole new stage presence and Alex definitely brings in a lot energy with his drumming and keeps us on point.
What is your song writing process?
Mike: I think about things that upset me, or things that I went through, and I kind of go out and experience life if I don't have anything new to write about. But I always end up being about the same girl or situation but I try to find a new way to say things. My main goal is to move past talking about the ex girlfriend. But the music writing style is going to change with every album because were all finally getting to add in all of our own different influences.
How would you describe your music in one word?
What's your favorite part about being in a band together?
Mike: I get to do all of this with four of my best friends.
Gonzo: Our band chemistry
Kendall: I have so much playing with these guys and I can't wait to go on tour.
RJ: We have a lot of fun together
Alex: It's a lot less intimidating to go on stage with your friends instead of by yourself.
What advice would you have for a fan(s) who want to become a musician or start a band?
Mike: Get ready to spend a lot of money and be ready to work for it because if you don't work for it, you won't get what you deserve.
Gonzalo: it all starts with picking up an instrument. I mean I started playing music pretty late. So just go out and pick up an instrument and start playing. You may sound terrible but it's okay, it'll get better.
Kendall: Don't pass up any opportunity.
RJ: Just pick up an instrument and put the time in.
Alex: Play what you enjoy playing and don't try to sound like everyone else. Don't follow a trend, play what you feel comfortable playing.
