I know it’s probably a long shot, but in case anyone has any old or unused tallises, The Chevra Kadisha of Queens and Long Island and The Hebrew Free Burial are in dire need of them because of the number of deceased from COVID-19.
If you’re able to either;
1) Drop off at 136-06 71st Road in Kew Garden Hills by placing in the labeled plastic bin on the front porch (this way there is no need for any physical proximity) 2) Mail it to: Mount Richmond Cemetery 420 Clarke Avenue Staten Island, NY 10306
This is a big mitzvah as not everyone has tallises at home to be buried in. If you are abroad or in other parts of the U.S., I would also recommend reaching out to your local chevra kadisha to see if they need them as well.
Mod here. If anyone knows of another chevra kadisha in need of tallitot, feel free to reblog or comment with information.
Funny story:
I have a BEAUTIFUL tallit. My mom made it. The atarah is my Hebrew name in bobbin lace over a bobbin lace background. There’s also little bobbin lace decorations in the corners (see below for a close up of the gimmel and nun, which is the only convenient picture I’ve got of it). She says it took a thousand hours.
So with this incredibly labor intensive tallit, I am under strict care instructions which leads me to my funny thing:
When I put it on, if I’m wearing lipstick I don’t kiss it. I say the bracha and air kiss it. I always say it’s cause “mom scares me more than HaShem.”
I'm super excited to be starting work on the next items I'll be offering. This is my first #handmade #tallit & will be for my beloved spouse. Once I've got the pattern down, expect many #pride variations in #tallitot! I would like to also thank Aaron - who shared his love of Jewish ritual items with my Into to Judaism class and stoked the flame that is my love of beautiful #judaica! These projects would not exist without the love you shared with our class and the fact that you made sure we knew that YES, YOU CAN make your own!
I’m really excited to wear a tallit on Shabbat morning after my conversion is complete (my mikveh for conversion is on May 3rd). Are there things I should know before hand? I see some people drape it over their head/face while davening. Is that a “do it when it feels right” thing or are there customs around it that I’m obviously unaware of? If it matters my Shul is non-denominational/reform leaning.
Making the fringed edges of this #tallit requires hours of patience & fiddly work with a pin, pulling threads to create the fringe that will lay alongside the tzitzit. #judaica #workinprogress #tallitot
