Hmm, I definitely see both. It’s an interestingly allegorical way of looking at it, and I think the allegory is definitely valid and there, but I also see them as separate characters falling in love. It’s cool to think about!

You know, I already thought “oooh hands this has a very Utena feel” when I saw that and I that was well before I got to the end! It’s lovely to see the way that this show has made its mark and influenced others; there were a few times throughout where I went “oh, so this is what that moment in Steven Universe was referring to...”

I really love this analysis-- and even though I was pretty stunned when I read that some people think Black Rose is ‘filler’, I don’t think I could have articulated why it’s not this well, at least not without a good long while and a couple re-watches, haha. But yeah, what makes Utena such a genuinely good person is that she cares, and she reaches out, and that’s why even though Akio thinks nothing has changed once she ‘drops out’, we can see from the little hints of their growth that he’s wrong. He’s so very wrong.

And yeah, I’ve actually been linked this image before (after I answered the ask about it lol) and... sure. Maybe that’s what they intended, or at least what this concept artist intended. But it is absolutely not what’s going on, because hair doesn’t work that way. I am firm on this point :p

And, honestly, even if that’s what’s supposed to be happening, which makes no sense since the back of her hair when it’s long is contiguous and doesn’t have the short layer that would need to be there to cover the theoretical braid... what would be the point? There would still need to be excessive amounts of magic going on to unbraid it and fluff it out in the course of a couple-second-long transformation sequence, so why not just let that magic grow it?

I know my being so firm on this might seem odd when I was so upset about her hair being short, but it just feels a little cop-out-y to me. Use the magic to the fullest, mang.

Yeah, you’re right. I wasn’t so much thinking of it as the same continuity, because I haven’t been thinking of any of the movie as the same continuity, but you’re totally right; if that was the originally intended backstory then given her reactions to Akio she couldn’t have known.

Yeah, I’m going to need to have a longer pick at this, because there’s definitely things to be said here. The car in the series seemed to be a combination of a false promise of freedom, what with Akio scooping people up into it as though he was going to save them and instead just twisting them deeper into his game, and a vague sexual metaphor, just given how weirdly charged it was and his continual half-stripping.

Here, we definitely have some sexual metaphor-- good gracious, that key-- but the fact that Shiori was self-driving and Wakaba was just giving some friends a lift muddles that. Maybe it has more to do with power, with Shiori using what power she has solely for herself and thus crashing and burning, Wakaba using her love for her friends to help them out, and Utena and Anthy turning their blazing love into a revolution...?

Yeah, I can kind of see that, though also she explicitly dated Touga in the movie so I don’t want to read her too much as a little sister figure... but yeah, I am very much seeing the series and movie versions of these characters as separate people.

I’d believe it, yeah-- I think I even mentioned that the dragon-horse heads were probably meant to be horses as a White Knight idea. I think I remember someone telling me that the thing with them on horses in armour was planned for the series at first but never really ended up happening?

I do think she got the short end of the stick, sort of simplified to be an easier villain. I’m not sure it would have been possible to avoifd that entirely-- it’s a pretty short movie-- but it is a shame. And poor Nanami! I miss her! I miss my troublesome daughter!

This is wild. I did notice a few scenes being pretty strobe-y, especially Anthy with the swords in those last two episodes, but luckily for me I’m not super sensitive to that... it’s always wild, what new things we discover with developing technologies.

And yeah, Shiori does seem to have been... simplified. I wasn’t really holding out hope for them reconciling in the series either, to be honest, but it’s definitely out of the picture here. I just want Juri to get to grow up and move on....

Oof, yeah, I agree that that’s a little simplistic. I talked to my screener a little about this and he suggested it was largely victim-blaming with a bonus helping of his behaviour being taped killing the image of the Prince itself, because nobody would have been able to look at him and see The Prince anymore. I really like those interpretations.. and Anthy and Utena running him the fuck down at the end of the movie was satisfying as hell :)

Exactly! He’s a genuinely detestable person in a very real way, deflecting all blame for his actions onto those around him-- and especially the women around him.

Oof, yeah, that makes sense with... his kind of logic. He is very much the corrupter-- Lucifer, as we’ve already noted-- so of course he plays on her worst fears, the things she doesn’t like about herself, every weakness he can find. And that makes it all the more powerful that she was able to pull herself out of his sway and fight, and all the more of a gut punch when... what happened... happened.

God, I can’t even say it.

Yes! It’s the intimacy of their discussions in bed but turned up to eleven; there, there were still things Anthy couldn’t say, but here all their searching comes out. They breach the gap and hold each other, physically and emotionally.

...and like with the last answer, the end of that episode makes it all kind of hang in the air... we’ll see what happens with it shortly.
