We took the Spirit Lake Scenic Backway from McKinnon, WY to the Tamarack and Jessen Lake trail. It was about a 4 mile loop from Spirit Lake and a beautiful hike at 10,000 ft elevation through the woodpecker filled forest. Route finding was a little difficult in some spots due to side trails around the lake. We made it with some backtracking and GPS help. Spirit Lake Backway is a dirt road but it's well maintained. There is a campground, lodge, cabins and store at the lake but they were closed. I guess their season is over, but the daytime temperatures were in the upper 50s for our hike.
