The order of the cinema, ticket booth to screen, is essential to the intended relationship between the real and the imaginary. As the entrance “serves as a border between the real and the imaginary - the ticketed passageway from everyday life into the construed other world of the movies” (Ameri, p81).

After reading about Eisensteins comparisons between film theory and architecture, I’ve decided to revisit my old original test on the bodily experience. Without even realising, I created a narrative, a montage of images that tell a story to reveal the space as a whole. Once you remove the collection of images and show them individually, they lose their vitality and become a flat image of whatever is being shown, losing the sense entirety.

Montage, a collection of shots/images to help the viewer make overall sense of a place. Roxy is a monument to miramar.

I’ve decided to revisit my original test but through Eisenstein’s comparison of architecture and montage, using a sequential series of images to tell a narrative of a space.

All of these pictures show ways that the space is framed with individual aspects of Miramar to give a sense of the community as a whole.

The mirror on the top floor frames the spectators view, guiding the their focal point to the ceiling.

The ceiling is a strong representation of Weta workshops, a strong company heavily involved with the film industry, and their creative works. This is accompanied by sculptures throughout the upper foyer.

The windows on the east end of the building frame the Miramar shops facing the cinema.

Every space in the cinema has its own identity that contributes to the bigger space.

Test 2. Bodily Experience through the Roxy Cinema, Miramar Recording a Walkthrough The approaches to the staircases resemble the approach to an alter in that you are approaching a form of culturally relevant iconography. The way that the light pours in through the windows is reminiscent of some sort of devine power, as represented in biblical paintings such as Rembrandt’s “Ascension.” The ceiling is like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The interior is of a grand scale, with high ceilings and decorative motifs throughout which has the effect of inspiring awe. Central focal points above the eyeline which draw your attention upwards. Strategically placed artefacts that guide you through the space. Meaningful artefacts that are relevant to local identity and culture.
