Title: Tangleroot | Author: Kalela Williams | Publisher: Feiwel & Friends (2024)
Rating: 1/5
Book Blurb:
The INDIES INTRODUCE and INDIE NEXT debut YA novel about blood and family that is both history and mystery. Noni Reid has grown up in the shadow of her mother, Dr. Radiance Castine, renowned scholar of Black literature, who is alarmingly perfect at just about everything.
When Dr. Castine takes a job as the president of the prestigious Stonepost College in rural Virginia, Noni is forced to leave her New England home and, most importantly, a prime internship and her friends. She and her mother move into the “big house” on Tangleroot Plantation.
Tangleroot was built by one of Noni’s ancestors, an enslaved man named Cuffee Fortune—who Dr. Castine believes was also the original founder of Stonepost College, and that the school was originally formed for Black students. Dr. Castine spends much of her time trying to piece together enough undeniable truth in order to change the name of the school in Cuffee’s honor—and to force the university to reckon with its own racist past.
Meanwhile, Noni hates everything about her new home, but finds herself morbidly fascinated by the white, slaveholding family who once lived in it. Slowly, she begins to unpeel the layers of sinister history that envelop her Virginia town, her mother’s workplace, her ancestry—and her life story as she knew it. Through it all, she must navigate the ancient prejudices of the citizens in her small town, and ultimately, she finds herself both affirming her mother’s position and her own—but also discovering a secret that changes everything.
Review:
When the daughter of a renowned scholar of Black literature is forced to move into a plantation the last thing she expects is to discover is to be investigating the morbid history of her small town and discovering a secret. This book just missed the mark for me. I was hoping for an engrossing small town mystery vibe but just kind of found myself bored and skimming the pages. This one just didn't really work out for me and I just couldn't get into it despite trying over and over. I managed to finish it just to prove that I did read it to the end, but it just didn't really catch my attention. If you like small town mysteries, I'd say give it a go, maybe you'll have a better time with it than I did.

BERRIES OF PRIDE
Poppypaw was making their way on patrols with their mentor, Tangleroot. Their tail was wriggling with excitement, for this was not only their first patrol, but their first time outside of the camp. Tangleroot looked down to her young apprentice and smiled, then carried on. As they made their rounds, Poppypaw heard a ruckus. "Tangleroot! I hear someone talking!" Tangleroot approached behind them and pulled some bushes aside "I believe you're right." The two peered into the meadow that was hiding behind the trees and found the Larvesta and Parasect arguing, a pile of berries in between them.
"Look, we both know who worked harder here, and it definitely wasn't your lazy bones! I should get the first berry!" the Parasect scoffed in response to the Larvesta "That's preposterous! You've hardly worked hard for every day of your life, you worthless yap! The first berry should go to me!" Tangleroot looked from left to right at the two "Oh dear....this could end poorly if someone doesn't intervene." Poppypaw looked up at their mentor then back at the pokemon. Her brows furrowed and she leaped out of her hiding spot and wriggled over. "Poppypaw-" Tangleroot was about to follow them, but decided to stay put and watch how they handled the matter. Afterall, she could just intervene if it got bad.
"That's so dumb, you-" The Larvesta felt a tug on its leg and it looked down to Poppypaw quizzically. "What are you two fighting over?" They blinked with big eyes. "Who gets the first berry, obviously! I picked the most berries, so it should go to me." The Parasect huffed "SCOUNDRAL! He's lying, I picked the most!" "these guys aren't fighting over berries, this is a pride thing....how am I gonna get them to cool down?" Poppypaw thought to themself, tail curling. "oh, that's it!" They perked up. Poppypaw inched over to the berries and picked up an oran berry. "I was watching, so I know who gets the berry." The two pokemon looked at them. "Really?- I mean, it's so obviously me" the Larvesta said. "HAH! Oblivious buffoon, the prize goes to ME!" The parasect gleamed. Poppypaw held up the berry "It goes toooo-ahhh, ahhh, AACHOOOO!" They faked a sneeze while spitting a string shot out at oran berry. "Oh, excuse me!" The two pokemon stared in defeat and disgust, speaking in unison "Bless you.." Poppypaw perked up and held up the berry "Anyway- Heres the berry!" They held it in no general direction, but neither of the pokemon reached for it. "You know what, I think you picked the most, I think you should have it" The Larvesta backed up. "No no no, nonsense! It's your prize, you're the winner here, it's clear as day, you have it!" The Parasect backed up as well.
Poppypaw felt a smug grin under their face, but kept an oblivious expression "Oh wow, I guess you two are more generous than I thought!" Larvesta looked at them "Huh? Oh, I mean, of course! I'm super generous, the most generous you could say." The Parasect huffed "Uhm, no, It is I, I'm the generous one here, you wouldn't even share your shelter with a kit" The Larvesta butted over "WHAT?! THAT'S RIDICULOUS! I'll have you know I once shared my shelter with 10 kits!" The Parasect laughed "when the lechonk fly, then I'll believe you!" Poppypaw sighed and wriggled back over to their mentor. Tangleroot chuckled "There are just some things you can't fix." Poppypaw drooped "No Kidding"
