Chelsea’s latest musical effort, her 5 song EP, “Medicine Cabinet” is the result of her carefully nurtured, yet natural progression of her brand of introspective self-care therapy channeled through unflinching, highly personal lyricism coupled with mastery of songcraft.
If you were to solely read the lyrics, you might expect them to be draped over dirges, but rather the contrary is true: these torrid tales of tribulation are ensconced within a vehicle of unrelentingly smart, snappy changes, driving rhythms, and whipcrack solos. But, beware the bright and shiny finishes on this EP, there are a 1,000 razor sharp splinters just under the surface that’ll cut you right to the quick if you’re not careful.
The EP as a whole to my ears feels like a chronological history of rock and roll, (even beatlesque I dare say), wherein the first couple tunes feature themes of falling in, and then out of love (to put it mildly) and have the feel of tunes from the jukebox in a teenage malt shop. Midway through, further sophistication and a bit of psychedelia kicks in over a plaintive plea for independence and true direction. Next up, a bit of proggishness rears its nimble limbs, and to finish out, a swan song of sorts, but one that kicks you right back to the beginning for another listen!
