Maggie, Rosita, and Tara in “Conquer”

Maggie realizes her talents for diplomacy this episode, trying to build consensus about keeping Rick in the safe zone, and working on Reg and Deanna to convince them that Rick is not a bad bet. She clearly has a knack for it -- she is comfortable going from house to house to make the case for Rick prior to the meeting.

During the meeting, Maggie’s speech, which is the last one from the group, is extremely strategic because it suggests a future where the two groups make up one family. She brilliantly mentions that father trusted Rick, subtly reminding the ASZers that although Rick’s group seems frighteningly hardened, they all have families they love or loved, just like the people in the ASZ.

Maggie closes the episode by rescuing Sasha and Father Gabriel, and the last we see, the three characters are praying together. I’m glad that Maggie and Sasha’s friendship continues, even if it means that Father Gabriel is still on the scene. Rosita doesn’t do too much this episode. It’s mentioned that she is the one who patched Rick up (maybe she’ll take on the role of medic), and we see her engineering a reunion between Abraham and Eugene. We end with her sitting at Tara’s bedside, smiling happily when she sees her friend has regained consciousness. Rosita is still given way too many handmaiden tasks, but I really like the other aspects of her personality. Her friendship with Tara is adorable.

Well, this is our last recap for the season! I’ll post occasionally and respond to asks, but otherwise I’ll see you in fall.

Tara, Maggie and Francine in “Spend” (Feminist Walking Dead)

This wasn’t a big week for women’s plotlines (we don’t see any of Rosita, Michonne, or Sasha), but it was good to see Tara being her honest self with Eugene, and later to see him overcome his fear to protect her. I hope they expand on this friendship mainly because it’s rather sweet, but also because it’s one of the few male/female relationships that has no romantic potential. Tara also seemed very interested in someone named Holly, so maybe we’ll see more of that character.

Maggie is acting as consigliere/agricultural consultant to Deanna, and things seem to be running smoothly. Deanna seems to value Maggie’s opinion, although I wonder whether that will change after Father Gabriel does his whole “human sacrifice, dogs and cats laying down together” speech about how bad the group is. The show is clearly emphasizing Maggie’s sound judgment and people skills, and it’s about time.

We also met Francine, who appears to be another potentially valuable resident of Alexandria. Abraham rescues her when Tobin wants to leave her for dead. Francine punches Tobin in the face for that. She’s clearly a strong woman, and Abraham has probably earned her loyalty for saving her life. I’m quite glad to see her because up until then we mostly have seen ASZ women in the context of things like recipes, cell phones, favorite foods, pasta makers, and book clubs.

Carol, Tara and Rosita in "Them"

Carol doesn't have a lot of screen time, but Melissa McBride, as always, makes the most out of it.

Carol sees that Daryl is suffering and follows him out to the woods. She knows he's sad about Beth and points out he's not alone: Beth didn't just save Daryl's life, she saved Carol's life, too. She gives him Beth's knife and tells him that even though she can't let herself feel, he needs to make himself feel his grief. She kisses him on the forehead, strokes his hair, and leaves him to his mourning. It's an incredibly tender moment between the two characters.

It's nice that these two seem to trade off so seamlessly in taking care of each other. Carol might still be hurting from everything she has been through, but Daryl is at a low point and she steps up for him. A few weeks ago, it was the other way around.

I also observed how carefully Carol chooses her words with Daryl when it comes to his emotional state. She doesn't put words in his mouth or pretend to know exactly how he feels, she just states fact -- Beth saved their lives, and he needs to mourn -- and leaves him to it.

It's not just Daryl that Carol is attuned to, though. She encourages Rick about Carl, and tells Maggie point-blank that Maggie isn't going to give up, because like Carol, Maggie doesn't give up. Interestingly enough, like Michonne, she doesn't say a word during Rick's "we are the walking dead" speech. I would have enjoyed hearing her take on that worldview.

We don't see much of Tara and Rosita in this episode, but they have a really cute moment when they are lying on their backs giggling in the rain that reminds you of what they might have been like pre-ZA -- two friends enjoying being silly together. It's a grace note.

Your Carl and Tara brotp fic was the cutest thing I've ever read oh my gosh. I really hope a conversation like that was exchanged between the two of them.

I am so glad you enjoyed! I had forgotten how much I enjoyed writing her! And it was a great experience writing a more grown up version of Carl as well.
