my sweet old cornelius died today 😔 I figured it was coming soon, he had stopped eating and was slowing down. he lived a year longer than I expected him to, so cheers to that. thanks for being a good first tarantula dude ❤️
I'm curious! What's your interaction with your spiders like? Do they get to leave the enclosure often? Do they enjoy/tolerate being petted?
Tarantulas tend to be pretty hands off pets, though their tolerance for handling varies from species to species and individual to individual. I’m not sure “enjoy” is the right word, but some can be very tolerant of it.
Arachne, the brown curly hair, is VERY tolerant of handling. I don’t pull her out too often to avoid stress, but she will occasionally hang out on the coffee table or on my knee while I watch TV. (Maybe like once a week?)
Anansi, the fireleg, is brand new, younger, and seems more skittish. She tried to flick hairs (which are a big skin irritant for mammals) at me just moving her into her new tank. So I haven’t handled her at all yet.
New tarantula dropped and it is so twiggy.
Gave my dwarf tarantula a cricket that was way too big for her last night, except it was already dead, so it was fine. I just offered it to her with my tongs, and I don't think I've ever had a bug more violently ripped away from me by such a tiny creature. Literally just poked the webs with her half dead cricket near her and this bitch SNATCHED IT and retreated into a tunnel she's built with her webs. And when I say I don't think I've ever seen a spider so absolutely fucking thrilled to get fed I mean it. She dragged it halfway across her enclosure through the tunnel and then left it to web up her tunnel a bit more. And this spider was happy dancing so rhythmically I could've sworn she was actually just really dancing and not just doing something she's biologically programmed to do. Anyways. I love my olive Trinidad dwarf tarantula and I need to get a gold form of her soon since I am such a sucker for this one that I know I'm gonna fall in love so completely with another of the same species but just a different color. Sol is such a little baby 💛 I love spiders, and people can't ruin them for me no matter what.
