Is drop in electricity tariff in preparation for Permatang Pauh by-election, asks Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 12, 2015:

The slight decrease of only 4% for just four months in electricity tariff has shocked Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, prompting him to describe it as a “desultory disease”.

Lim questioned whether  the fourth-month drop in electricity tariff was also a by-election “goodie” due to its timing.

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, said usually any increase or decrease in tariffs was made for a year instead of just four months.

“Why only four months from March to June?

“Is it in preparation for the Permatang Pauh by-election after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is disqualified from his post in two weeks’ time?” he asked reporters at a press conference in his office in Komtar here today.

“If Anwar does not apply for a royal pardon and he gets disqualified in 14 days, this means there will be a by-election in 60 days.

“So this four-month period of reduced power rate seems like it is for the by-election.”

Lim was referring to an announcement by Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili yesterday that the electricity tariff would be slashed fro the period from March to June.

The new tariff will see a reduction of 2.25 sen per kWh for those using more than 300 kWh per month.

Lim said the slight drop of 4% was “very little” and felt that Tenaga Nasional (TNB) should reduce the rate by 35%.

“TNB’s net profit increased by 35%, so it (should) share with the people by dropping its tariff by 35%.

“I am not asking them to reduce the tariffs by 50%, like the drop in global oil prices.

“I’m only asking for a 35% drop. It certainly should have seen a sharper drop.”
