Tarte- Best In Faux Lash Extending Fibers
What it is: An easy-to-apply, faux lash system with sculpting fibers that enhance lash length and volume to create the appearance of false eyelashes.
Price: $20.00
Ever since I began using makeup, I have been utterly obsessed with the appearance of my lashes. I have tried just about every mascara under the sun, all claiming to add volume, length, and the like.
I discovered this faux lash kit while I was poking around Sephora, and of course it piqued my interest. A friend of mine uses fibers on her lashes (a very expensive brand with the fibers already in the mascara) and I thought I would give it a shot. I currently use (and love) Tarte’s Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara, as well as several other Tarte products, so I had high hopes for this kit. I purchased it, and returned home to immediately apply it. With horrific results.
The system itself is simple. Add a base coat of mascara (that is provided in the kit) to prep the lashes. Next, take the tube of fibers and apply them on to the wet mascara so they will stick. Finally, add a final coat of mascara to lock it all in place. Applying the fibers was easy, and I noticed that while the difference was not huge, my lashes did appear slightly fuller. The problem lies with how the product wears.
Now, let me preface the rest of this review by telling you that I do not have sensitive eyes. They have suffered through some serious mistreatment (including my 7th grade phase of applying dabs of mascara to my waterline to replace liner) and they have powered valiantly through it all without much protest. I guess that this product was where they drew the line.
Withing minutes of applying this product, I could feel that a few of the fibers had fallen into my eyes. I brushed it aside, sure that with a little extra blinking, my eyes would flush them out. This wasn’t the case at all.
Every time I blinked, more fibers seemed to shake themselves loose and take up residence inside my eyes. After about five minutes of wear, it felt like I had glass in my eyes. Unfortunately, I had decided to run a quick errand, and had to spend about 40 minutes with this product on my eyes. Any amount of blinking, or rubbing my eyes, did not relieve this extreme discomfort. Driving home while trying to keep my eyes open against the pain was one of the most uncomfortable things I have experienced in quite some time.
As soon as I got home, I grabbed my makeup remover wipes to try to remove all the mascara. However, even with my eye makeup off, my eyes were still burning. The pain didn’t recede until I had removed all of my makeup and generously applied some Visine.
Needless to say, I was not only disappointed by this experience, but angry as well. The first thing I did the next day was return this kit to Sephora for a refund. Ultimately, I decided that purchasing some false lashes would be my best bet for added lash glam.
In short, not only did this fiber kit not make a significant difference in lash appearance, it hurt like holy hell. Unless your eyes have balls of steel, I do not recommend using this product. There are easier ways to get the appearance of fuller lashes without going through the pain this kit brings.
