Remembering James H. Pierce on the anniversary of his birth.

Discovered by Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs at a Tarzana pool party, Pierce starred in FBO’s “Tarzan and the Golden Lion” (1926), with Dorothy Dunbar as Jane.

The son of a farmer, James Hubert Pierce was born August 8, 1900, in Freedom, Indiana (population 500), traveling west to seek his fortune after graduating from Indiana University, where he played center on the football team. Pierce was coaching high school football, mulling a law school application, and dabbling in acting when he was cast as the ape man.

After meeting the author’s daughter Joan Burroughs at the party, the couple began dating and eventually married on his birthday, August 8, 1928. The two had a son and a daughter, and appeared together in the first “Tarzan” radio programs in 1932-34. Onscreen, Pierce’s imposing size relegated him to small roles as cops and heavies, with rare exceptions, like Prince Thun, the lion man, opposite another former Tarzan in the Universal serial “Flash Gordon,” starring Buster Crabbe.

James Pierce died December 11, 1983, in Apple Valley, California, age 83. He was preceded in death by wife Joan, who passed on December 31, 1972.
