There seems to be a bit of a mismatch when it comes to people reviewing the Odyssey movie and calling other people stupid for not agreeing with them, so here are my two cents
There are very different expectations/wishes you can have for the movie, that'll drastically change your viewing experience. Obv we're only gonna cover realistic ones that you can infer from reading the blurb or watching the trailers, not "I wanted a cute romcom" cos like no one suggested that was coming.
"I expect a relatively close adaptation of the Odyssey by Homer, specifically the Emily Wilson translation." Realistic because: The movie is called The Odyssey (a loose adaptation usually changes the title, like EPIC or Oh brother where art thou), the trailers show a lot of characters and moments from the Odyssey without hinting at significant story changes.
"I expect a loose adaptation with a unique spin" Realistic because: The trailers showed some unique choices that may suggest this and level of adaptational changes vary a lot
"I expect a Nolan movie" Realistic because: It's written and directed by Nolan.
"I expect a high quality movie in effects, writing, directing, acting, characters, and themes" Realistic because: The movie cost 250 million. And it is dealt as THE summer blockbuster, so it should be good.
"I expect the movie to have a strong basis of historical/mythological accuracy within reason" (within reason meaning that every movie will make creative decisions and complete accuracy is impossible and often not desirable.) Realistic because: Interviews about the historically accurate music and Hathaway and Damon reporting on learning ancient skills for the movie suggests a lot of attention to detail and an interest in historical accuracy as far as possible. *
"I expect the movie to showcase Ancient Greek culture" Realistic because: This is a very culturally significant text for Greece and Greek culture, so respecting it seems like a very reasonable expectation. Also, the movie received 6 Million in subsidies from Greece, which is not a creative obligation but makes it a realistic expectation that the film is celebrating greek culture as well as it just being a morally cool thing to do when you're writing about a culture that's not your own
*historical accuracy note because a lot of people seem to be under the impression that a myth cannot be historically accurate. You're thinking of fairytales. Myths HAVE a time and place attached to them. That doesn't mean that you can't do what Homer did and mix different eras of Greek culture for your vision, but you can't just put a smartphone into the mix cos "it's fantasy and it didn't happen" Moreover, the movie states its time period. It's the bronze age collapse, aka 13-12th century BC. Greece existed during that time and so a story set there is in a historical setting. The magic doesn't change that, it's basically urban fantasy, the setting is realistic with added magic. That is how religious texts and myths generally work, because a high-fantasy setting would defeat the purpose. A myth needs to be believably historically and culturally accurate for the people who believe it to be true, in this case, the Ancient Greeks. Does this mean everything needs to be 13th- and 12th century accurate in the movie? NO, but if it isn't, it IS historically inaccurate. That doesn't have to be a bad thing or break the movie, but it is a neutral fact. back to the show.
Now, all of these are reasonable expectations and priorities to have, and they will shape your experience, because depending on how each of these ranks for you in priority, shortcomings and successes alike will have more or less weight.
For example, I don't really care about Nolan's style that much. I don't mind it, I liked the batman films as far as I remember, but it being a good Nolan film will not significantly positively impact my enjoyment.
But if the movie diverted a lot from Nolan's usual style, someone who loves that style might be super disappointed and it would negatively impact their enjoyment even though someone else doesn't see anything wrong.
Both of these are valid takes, and what I am trying to get at is that you shouldn't act like your personal priorities are the only right ones. I didn't like Avengers Infinity War cos I found the character writing pretty weak for a lot of the cast, but someone who loves action scenes will likely adore this film.
tldr if you found your priorities met, great, all the power to you, but be accepting that other people, based on reasonable assumptions, had different expectations that mattered to them and weren't met, and vice versa. It's okay to just be like "this person made this point of criticism, but honestly it didn't really impact my viewing experience so idc"
Also I probably need to say this if your issue with the movie is the four POC / marginalized group actors among the mozzarella white (and equally non-greek!!) cast, congrats, you found like the one objectively stupid criticism that's not worth engaging. Go touch grass and try to engage your brain, might be good for it :) /full offense

Sometimes I be typing an answer to a message and suddenly be like huh is this an epiphany
Like now when I was ranting about my father coming into my room while I work to talk to my mom through the window. And my friend was like is he trying to sabotage you or smt
And I was like he doesn't care that much. And then I realized that he doesn't have to care. There is never any danger of me succeeding in anything, because if I fail it's my fault for being lazy and not listening to his advice, and if I succeed it's because my mom helped me with my schoolwork in school or because she's otherwise helping me out so I don't have to worry about my basic needs being met while working. In his eyes, I can never have a genuine achievement so there's absolutely no need to sabotage it for fear of me getting too much self esteem or something
