(or rather the au where Jamil is the protagonist of a dating sim.)
This started off as a question about what kind of archetype my friend’s ocs would be if they were ever in a dating sim, needless to say it ended up escalating into another full blown AU 😭Shoutout to @anbaisai , @fell-e and @crystallizsch for participating in my delusions and also playing a big part in shaping this au.
This au takes place as one of the games streamer Gloomurai picks up on— one of his viewers recommends the game Hiss hiss fall in love! A very niche dating sim that has a cult following; it’s infamous for its difficulty and intricacy in maintaining a relationship with your love interest. Of course Gloomurai loves a challenge so he downloads the game, and he is introduced to the world’s most over-designed and emotionally constipated protagonist, Jamil Viper. OR, as Gloomurai has decided to name him; Chudson Fumbleton.

About the game and its features:
The beginning of the game is set in the first year of the protagonist’s high school. The default name for him is Jamil Viper (but you the player have the option to change this… a certain streamer has taken a liking to naming him as Chudson Fumbleton after experiencing the worst run in his streaming career)
You follow Jamil Viper from his freshman to senior year of high school, and help him develop meaningful relationships with his classmates. Each month has special events waiting for you to experience.
Like with most dating sims, there are multiple endings to unlock. There are the basic good and bad endings with each LI, but also some endings that are more… dependent on you as a player. (This game kinda follows Jamil’s canon story in TWST so there will be a point where the book 4 canon event will happen, if you aren’t able to help Jamil after that point your run could end prematurely)

About the protagonist:
You play as Jamil Viper, the emotionally constipated protagonist of HHFIL. Players (as many as the game has, anyway) complain about his overdesigned appearance and his inner monologuing that they find difficult to relate to.
He tends to avoid standing out. Due to this, it’s hard to pinpoint what kind of person he is. If you were to ask other students what they knew about him, the common reply would be that he’s “average.”
Behind the “average” mask he wears, Jamil is more skilled than he lets on (demonstrated through his… massive list of skills you can acquire and upgrade). As mentioned, he has a tendency to monologue in his head - always thinking and rarely acting on impulse. All of this is to play his role perfectly: an obedient servant.
Born as a servant under the Al-Asim family, you serve as the attendant for their eldest child, Kalim. He’s friendly and outgoing, but often acts on impulse and burdens you with endless tasks of varying difficulty. To survive your runs, you will have to manage your stress and blot appropriately.
Despite the complaints about him, players enjoy seeing Jamil’s growth. It really reminds them of the messiness during that awkward stage in life called high school, where you’re both hormonal and irrational. While Jamil Viper keeps pushing a facade and believing he’s better than his peers, it’s easy to tell that he’s just as confused and lost.
Through progressing the story, the player also learns how his surrounding circumstances have pushed him to mature faster than everyone else, while hardly ever experiencing the freedom of simply growing up.
But unlike TWST canon, in this AU Jamil is the main character, and you, as the player, can help him live his best high school life despite his circumstances. Help him navigate the messiest, angstiest phase of his life. Let him experience friendship, romance, and even heartbreak. Watch him grow as a person and enjoy all that life has to offer. Maybe even discover non-flame print fashion.
Dates & Gifts
The intimacy mechanic in this game focuses on maintaining an amicable relationship with your love interests (LIs). From people you meet at school, to ones you already know from your past, to those you never expected to see eye to eye with. You can also help them become friends with each other, or keep them as strangers. Each choice has its consequences.
With enough affection and trust, you can unlock outings and dates with your LI. Each person has their own preferences and reacts differently to certain events. (One person might find enjoyment in cat cafes whereas someone else could be… allergic to cats)
Look for clues about each LI’s preferences as you progress the story. Usually this can be easily done via directly asking them or taking note of their belongings (e.g. items they tend to use). Riskier attempts at learning more about the LIs are through reading their diary, and if all else fails… the ‘Call Najma’ button is a life hack.
Other times, it’s a matter of experimenting and seeing whether they like your gifts. This is more relevant for LIs such as Oz and Yuusha, who are more closed off and prefer keeping to themselves.
There’s a written guide of each of the LI’s preferences and schedule out there, but Gloomurai is a stubborn man and prefers experiencing the game blind. He’s determined to figure out each mechanic on his own, and has his Mods (or his automod bot) ban anyone who drops hints in the chat. (“Orthobot, break this guy’s kneecaps.”)
Closet
Before every date/outing, prepare with Jamil’s closet! Be sure to wear the appropriate clothes to the date because the LI does remember your choices (like how they’ll remember you as Mr. Guy Fieri if you keep choosing that option). The right clothes can raise your bond with your LI, but can also decrease your bond if you dress in a way they dislike.
Certain clothes have special buffs that activate in accordance to the event you wear them to. Other times, it’s a matter of impressing your LI with your 𝓼𝓾𝓫𝓵𝓲𝓶𝓮 fashion taste.
There’s a running gag where Jamil seems to have a hoodie for every single occasion. It’s your choice if you really wanna bring said hoodie for prom.
Gloomurai: “What the heck, this guy has… a flame hoodie, plain hoodie, kiss the chef hoodie, hot pink hoodie, sleeveless hoodie, a crop top hoodie..?”
Chat: “Try sorting by clothing type.”
Gloomurai: “Oh my god… 143 unlockable hoodies…”
👟OUTING
Opens up a map with locations on Sage’s Island that you can visit. There’s a chance of running into your LI if you head to places they frequent or enjoy. This is also when you can go to the store/mall and buy more clothes, ingredients, items, gifts etc.
And, if you’d like a change of pace… you can also get a haircut at the barbershop, which may elicit different reactions from each LI.
Extra Game Features:
Fishing
The technically optional, yet essentially mandatory fishing game. An easy way to get some ingredients & items for free.
Obtain various fish, treasure chests (loot boxes), and sometimes even a message in a bottle (gameplay hints, LI info, etc.). Just be careful when fishing, because there's a certain merman that you can invite into your play prematurely, who may or may not make your life harder.
Using a specific bait decreases the chances of said threat appearing.
🔮Oz’s Monthly Fortune:
- Maintaining a good relationship with Oz unlocks a small optional minigame where you can draw slips that may impact your “luck” status for the month (Total of 4 turns). You can only draw a slip at the start of the month, and you have the option to opt out.
GREAT LUCK extremely rare, drawing this slip greatly reduces the rate at which your stress accumulates, and guarantees a positive encounter with the LI with the highest affection.
GOOD LUCK reduces the speed at which your stress accumulates. Bringing a lucky item doubles this effect, and grants higher chance encounters with your LI. It also increases the rate at which you can obtain rare items, and obtain a high quality (HQ) result with cooking/crafting.
LUCK TO COME mainly gives a small energy, it’s neither a good or bad thing, it’s basically a “blank” fortune. Gives no debuff or buffs but Oz promises that the next one will surely be better (copium, it doesn’t guarantee shit)
BAD LUCK doesn't drain your energy, but does make you more prone to rival encounters (e.g. a certain merman may have a higher chance of manifesting during fishing). You also become more susceptible to stressful events. Bringing a lucky item can mitigate this for a little time. Lucky items can be obtained through various means, including shopping, random events, or fishing.
Part-time Job:
By default, you get paid bi-weekly for your servant duties. However, if you’re finding yourself strapped for cash, you can additionally apply for another part-time job somewhere.
There are many locations on the map you can choose from. Different jobs raise different stats, and may even increase your chances of running into an LI outside of school, if you choose a place they also work at or tend to visit.
You also get an employee discount when you buy items at your workplace. On that chef grind this run? Consider working at the grocery store for cheaper ingredients.
Having an extra job naturally increases your stress levels faster, though. Be sure to manage Jamil’s stress properly if you do so!
🌼CALL NAJMA!
Najma is a special NPC - your sister who always knows what advice to give your chud ass.
She is a very busy person (just like you), though, so make sure to only call her when you really need her. Bother her too much, and she might just get really mad and block you, making her inaccessible for a few turns.
Najma knows information about your LI, such as their likes and dislikes, and their schedules for the week. Sometimes even their opinions about you. (“They asked me why you keep wearing the same hoodie over and over 😬”)
Obtaining higher level information means you’ll have to bribe her by completing requested tasks. Though there's a really small chance that she gives it for free, if she’s in a good mood.
She does have no qualms about making fun of you so… ouch your pride.
🐍 Snake Whisper
A special button that only shows up in 2nd year.
Its purpose is a mystery until you progress further into the story. It glows during specific Kalim interactions and the player is forced to click it as scripted.
After a certain canon event in 2nd year, it basically becomes your emergency reset button. Failed a rizz check? Guess it’s time to convince the LI you Definitely Never Said That…
Requires you to pass certain WIT & CHARM stat checks to activate successfully, because you have to catch the LI off guard.
Limited uses per year, because it goes on a multi-turn cooldown with each use. Abuse it too much, and you’re headed straight towards a second overblot and GAME OVER.
School Calendar (Rough overview of School special events)
Some specific events only trigger during certain years, The events listed per month are only a small overview of what you could expect during that month. (For example: Fairy Gala only occurs during your third year etc. )
Months with stars besides it have events that occur every year.
⭐ September - The start of the school year, during which there is a ceremony to welcome new students. This will be an important way to meet your LIs during your first year. This month is also full of club recruitments - you can stay in the same club for 4 years, or try different clubs every year. There is also a massive sports fest during this month, which you can participate in to boost your PHYS and REP stats.
Jamil’s own birthday occurs during this month if the player left it as the default “September 12.” This can be changed however, just like his name. You might receive gifts from your LIs on your birthday.
⭐ October - NRC is well-known for its Halloween event during October (essentially, a big Halloween-themed festival). It’s rumored that a past student popularized the holiday throughout the world, leading it to become a proud staple at the school. You can unlock special dates during this season, and your LIs have different reactions to the costume you choose to wear. Stroke a pumpkin for good luck! 🎃
⭐ November - The dreaded midterms month. During November you can also participate in a new extracurricular subject that the headmaster named “Master Chef.” (Every year will focus on different ingredients.) You can partner up with your LI, or simply focus on improving your cooking skills, so that you can create masterfully crafted dishes that your LI would appreciate.
December - Winter break - a big opportunity for J/V to rest and go home. By default, you always go home during your first year. However, your second year is a turning point where you… stay behind to work on some unfinished business. Huh? “Christmas?” Never heard of it.
⭐ January - Back to school after the break. During January, you have the opportunity to work for the New Year shop with your LI. There’s also a special date where you can visit the shrine with your friends, and spend a private moment with your LI.
⭐ February - Valentine's day! 💘 A special day where people gift chocolates to each other. Depending on your bond with the LIs, you can receive different chocolates (Giri, Honmei or Tomo). February is a short month, but it’s also the one with the highest opportunities for dates.
⭐ March - White Day is just around the corner 👀. This is your opportunity to return affection to someone special. The most awaited NRC founding day also happens during this month, so the Headmaster has made sure to organize a very special event for it… strange, is that a theme park on school grounds? (⬅️More date opportunities)
Mayu’s birthday.
April - Spring has arrived, and so have more events. There's a Gala being held at the school’s botanical garden, seemingly by fairies? You can use this opportunity to boost your reputation and unlock a special dance with your LI.
May - With summer slowly approaching, some strange things are occurring on campus. Rumors of a ghost bride haunting the halls are circulating.
June - Final exams for the current school year. Make sure that J/V has high WIT to easily pass the exams, or the headmaster might just expel you (or hold you back a year). “The school has a reputation to uphold!” as he would kindly say.
Fayrouz’s birthday.
July - A special event is taking place in your hometown, do you have the courage to ask that special someone? It's the fireworks show (Al’ab Nariya) that you’ve always looked forward to… maybe inviting them is a bad idea, but it’s surely worth a shot, right?
Yuusha’s birthday.
August - Last month of summer break before classes start again. You can join some classmates/friends at a summer outing that will help you relax (obligatory beach episode). Many activities await, and of course - many special moments that you could share with your LI.
Oz’s birthday.
Some additional notes about the AU:
This AU is set in a world where magic does not exist on Idia’s side (the IRL world).
In the actual game itself, magic does exist, and NRC is the school present in the game. To avoid confusion, we’ve decided that NRC exists solely in HHFIL. The same applies to any character present in HHFIL (meaning there is no evil eel man, there is no prince taking you on hot carpet rides, and there is no Ace Trappola irl)
Another difference with HHFIL NRC is that it is co-ed and also accepts non-mages. They have different courses for non-mages that don't involve magic (e.g. phys ed instead of flying)
The game had existed for over a decade by the time Idia found it. It has a small cult following, but the majority of its content is still untouched due to its unexpected difficulty.
Rumors of a “true ending” have circulated within its community, but the triggers are unknown, and the devs notoriously do not respond to any questions, or most communication for that matter. The only emails they reply to are mainly for bugs and patches. By the time Gloomurai streams the game, the last time there was any activity within its discussion boards or on the developer’s page was years ago.
Idia is in his late 20s for this AU, and there will be more info about him 👀 in a separate post.
Idia Shroud, or better known as his internet persona “Gloomurai,” is meant to represent the viewer for this AU. He’s sorta like the narrator who plays god with the protagonist, Jamil.
In this AU:
Magic doesn’t exist, therefore his beautiful flowing glowy mane is gone
He’s the son of the Director of STYX and has been working at the company since he’s next in line.
Due to an incident in the past, he lost his younger brother, and for a very long time he carried the guilt of believing he’s responsible for his death.
He ran to the video games he used to play with his brother as a means to cope. He started streaming vintage games, which lead to him gaining a following for how extremely skilled he is… and how funny he can be when infuriated. The chat’s always excited to see Gloomurai be actually stumped by something, but the best part is watching how he eventually figures it out.
Streaming used to mainly be a form of escapism for him, but after so many years it’s also become just a fun pastime.
He also streams his gacha pulls. The chat likes to spam “pity” (or whatever number is exactly 1 pull away from pity) whenever he asks how many pulls they think it’ll take. He calls his chat “cursed” because half the time they’re right. In return, they really enjoy watching him crash out.
He does not have a face cam (any instances of art featuring his live reaction is a joke). Fans have clamoured for him to do a face reveal, but due to him being obviously the heir of a Big Prominent Tech Company, he’d rather not… He does have a PNG he uses sometimes for streams, but he generally does whatever he wants and often streams without it.
